Re: Best mini iPad for VFR

I have a mini 5 wifi only in a Cherokee Before the mini 5 came out I had a mini3 cellular, I opted for the wifi with the upgrade because I rarely fly without an ADS-B receiver. The wifi versions of the iPad do not have a GPS chipset so you will need some kind of external GPS feed. The cellular versi...

Re: Re registering grass strip.

I remember flying R/C aircraft at that field back in the late 90's.

They used to do air cadet gliding off of that field but that was a really long time ago.

Re: uAvionix SkyBeacon installation in Canada

3. For high traffic density areas NavCanada is considering ground based antenna. The example he gave me was that if you have a ground station only system you will probably be ok in YVR class C, but not in YLW class C. It seems silly not to do this for the high density airports. Picking up 1090 ADS-...

Re: uAvionix SkyBeacon installation in Canada

Something I have not seen mentioned here is that 978mhz used by UAT is a DME channel that is still in use in Canada. The US UAT ground station network was planned around not interfering with our existing DME ground stations. Theoretically it is not legal to broadcast on 978 MHz in Canada but there d...

Not sure if the Kirby's still maintain a grass strip but they were the only real option back in the day.

Re: uAvionix SkyBeacon installation in Canada

I would wait and see before installing something that 100% will not meet our standards.

You do not actually need to have ADS-B OUT unless you fly in transponder airspace in the US after 2020.

Re: Music Fest at Edenvale Airport

If it is anything like the model airplane field I take care of I still cannot drive on it without sinking into the grass.

I drove by Edenvale this weekend and they had the stage and generators all lined up so I doubt it was cancelled because they didn't raise enough cash.

My plane came with a pair of 6 pin Bose X headsets and my partner and I both already owned A20's.

We have self powered ANR headsets for all four seats even though we rarely use all of them.

Re: Bose aviation headsets...pleased be advised:

One of the plastic side yokes cracked a few months ago, so it sent it to Brant Aero (the authorised Canadian repair shop) and got it back in a bit over a week, totally overhauled, with stronger side yokes, for just over CA $200 including HST and shipping. I did the same thing last summer. It got st...

Re: iPad mini 5 was just released

An external GPS can improve things quite a bit.

I window mount the Stratux so it always has a good quality GPS signal and I dont have to wait for the ipad to get a lock if it has been put to sleep.

That shi guy spammed the crap out of every vaguely aviation related sub reddit last year.

He didn't really have a good grasp of how to provide evidence and eventually his activity earned him a sitewide ban for spam.

Re: iPad mini 5 was just released

I have previously paid the cellular tax but decided that this time I'll live without the built in GPS. My plane has a Stratux and FS210 so I have two different GPS position sources. If I am flying in someone else's plane my iPhone is good enough to know where we are. The price difference is not as m...

iPad mini 5 was just released

https://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/

Nice to see an update on this line. I was a bit worried that they would just discontinue it.

My mini 3 is about 5 years old and the battery is getting long in the tooth and beginning to effect performance.

Re: Looks like we are going to have to get the expensive ADS-B

This is Nav Canada. They are a private company run on user fees.

Maintaining old radar sites and nav aids are expensive so they are moving to a system that pushes the costs onto the user.

If you do not go into transponder airspace an ADS-B mandate wont cost you a dime.

Foreflight does this if you have the pro version. It has an altitude advisor with selectable corridor widths and required obstacle clearance.

I 3d printed and sold close to 100 of them before going to injection molding. We have had 20000 of those cases injection molded since then along with 5000 of the suction cup mounts. https://i.imgur.com/VyiEZna.jpg My printer is not in very good shape after being run hard like that. Were the hoops hard to jump through to get the UL instructor rating? Did it have any effect on your insurance costs?

A friend of mine has a C42 on order and it should be arriving this spring.

I 3d printed a bracket that uses the existing holes in my panel. https://i.imgur.com/rZXTYDi.jpg It is on the far right of the panel right near the door to the aircraft. Easy to grab if you are getting out in an emergency. It is also easy to see if I have forgotten to turn it off at the end of the d...

Re: Looks like we are going to have to get the expensive ADS-B

Why can’t 978 be installed now? 978mhz is a DME frequency and is allocated to Nav Canada by Industry Canada for aviation use. So technically a US aircraft with 978 MHz OUT should turn it off when crossing the border since they do not have permission to use that frequency here. The satellites are no...

Crowdsourced ADS-B like weather network

Figured this would be a good place to reach out to the community to see if there is some interest in what we have been working on. In January I was asked to speak to the Kitchener COPA group about the work I have been doing. Full disclosure I sell Stratux hardware on amazon.ca, if you purchased a St...
