Re: The government push to lower wages.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-engineer-regulations-1.6851909 We saw the police plan last month... Engineers taking the first hit this month. I anticipate nurses, doctors, pilots etc will be next. Lower the requirements and bring in mass immigration. You think it's hard to fight for...

Re: New payscale
Spoken like true flight attendant........ "me too" Actually, it's this thing called "pattern bargaining".. something that has never truly happened in Canada. But has been wildly successful in the USA. In fact, if you actually listened to the recorded YVR roadshow you would have heard the reasoning ...

Re: New immigration program to fill in-demand jobs. Pilots made the list.
Both students and Flight Instructors have had a special Permanent Resident status process for years. It's still a long an expensive process. Just because they make the immigration/PR process a little faster, doesn't mean it's suddenly going to open the flood gates. With no details announced and the ...

Re: Agreement in Principle reached
I know it's tough cause there's 10 pages in this thread, for those who commented, I'd really urge you to read through my posts again. Setting out genuine comparators as opposed to general hyperbole is night and day difference than suggesting current pay rates are acceptable. RiskyBalloon wrote: This...

Re: Agreement in Principle reached
Some very valid points. Well written. However, my underlying message was that the goal of getting closer to the 'North American standard' seems to be missed. I was not taking any currency exchange into consideration. My point was even if WJ and an American carrier have the same increase in average ...

[/quote JBI] Despite crazy housing prices in some cities in Canada (and to be fair, Delta's junior base is LGA/JFK which has extremely high housing costs), the economic data shows that it's less expensive to live in Canada (primarily because of healthcare costs - as an aside, it's a really weird th...

Re: New payscale
It's the thing most people are waiting to see. AA, United, Delta all released their wages the day they got an agreement. Just saying it seems odd it's taking this long to get payscales. They could release them while still finishing up the rest of the TA language. I'm probably reading too much into ...

Re: Agreement in Principle reached
This may be true, however a 34% increase on a salary that is double ours will result in a very different increase. It would be in effect a 68% increase on an equivalent Canadian salary. The gap would then continue to widen..... This is where the precise numbers are important. Delta makes more than ...

Further to lostaviator’s post, I did provide this comment on the Telegram chat that agrees completely with lostaviator and provides some further consideration. Using the Bank of Canada calculator, inflation from the beginning of CA1 til now was 15%. BUT, CA1 had yearly cost of living increases of 2%...

The important thing to keep in mind is that Brian Lilley is a columnist rather than reporter. He and Ezra Levant were the co-founders of Rebel News and I think it's fair to say that they have a hate-on for unions period. Some of Brian Lilley's columns during the teachers dispute in Ontario were bord...

I'll follow up your questions with more questions. -At what point do you see yourself being able to make the move to full time flying? -And related, what salary do you feel you need to be able to make such a move? ' -Would you consider never flying full time and sticking with your corporate job? -Wh...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
If pilots or ame’s want to earn a salary in US$ working for a US domiciled airline, the best way to accomplish this is to jump through the hoops, get a green card or the appropriate work visa and move to the US. US airlines collect the vast majority of their revenue in US dollars. Canadian airlines...

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
I am a little fuzzy on this being an Ontario (provincial) Supreme Court Ruling when we are Federally regulated employees. Wouldn't that make it a Federal court jurisdiction? Court jurisdiction in Canada is a bit of a dog’s breakfast. The Superior Courts of each province (I.E. BC Supreme Court, Albe...

Re: Smaller Westjet vs Pay Pilots
To add to what rudder has said. While negotiations/conciliations are ongoing, the previous contract is frozen and in force. If conciliation is not extended or is unsuccessful, after a 21 day cooling off period, EITHER party is now in a position for self help or job action. The employees, through the...

I would agree. How does ALPA Canada view the MEC's current strategy for seeking rebid and bump and flush in its current CA negotiations and what negotiating capital do you think is going to be traded for that? Which MEC is seeking rebid and bump and flush? I don’t work at WJ but I assume that it pe...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
True but I think they voluntarily gave up the right to strike and agreed to binding arbitration. I believe during previous negotiations the union agreed to abandon strike ambitions in return for company voluntarily ceding Swoop representation to the same bargaining unit and both agreed to binding a...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
Binding arbitration is what got them a bum deal in their first contract under ALPA. ALPA offers support and makes recommendations, ultimately the MEC has the final word. If you go against the recommendations then you get what you get. Never take the binding option, ever. Keep the final decision in ...

Re: Meanwhile in 'Merica
FWIW, I don't quite understand Westjets "hail Mary" strike threat though. US carriers work sometimes for years on leveraging a new contract, in the meanwhile biding their time "following the existing contract" to the letter. No extras. Sort of a "soft" work to rule. I don't quite get this "all or n...
