Re: Flight School Crashes

While the number of accidents may seem high, when compared to the amount of money the insurance companies are making off of GA, I’m sure if they weren’t we would see rates steadily climbing. Ultimately the payout rate per flight hours flown is still pretty low. One must keep in mind how many airplan...

Re: Aerial Survey

Most survey is done single pilot, so your first step is to apply as a pilot, not an FO. The entry positions are likely to be 172, 182 and 206 jobs.

Re: Hero or Zero

It’s a bit hard to say without seeing the video. The 180/185s lightly loaded (Pilot only as far as we know) are kind of kites. More so if they’re equipped with any of the STOL kits. The big rudder remains effective at really low speeds to where changing direction even in a falling leaf, isn’t hard. ...

Re: Snowbird crash in CYKA

If there are among the unprepared If they’re unprepared, it’s usually because they were taught wrong. Two vectors here, first every once in a while an enterprising instructor decides that power is the first action to get out of a stalling situation, and we’ll if there is no power, we’ll then all is...

Most of the 912 installations don’t have a mixture control, and you turn off the engine with the mags. Which always sounds like someone stopped it with a wrench.

Answer Yes or No. I’ve seen it more than once. Extremely unprofessional in my view. No. I dont doubt you have seen it, my sarcasm is that from your posting history here, you make that assumption of all instructors, hence your first post in this thread. I express genuine shock that you would make a ...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

I recall my instructor audibly verifying fuel and oil levels with me after my walk arounds, checking oil themselves, and looking at fuel caps from the ground, to ensure they were secure. Surprised he had time to do that between instagram posts, checking facebook and re-calculating his time built to...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

Asking questions is a key component of good instruction - see the FIG. I agree with you it is not good to prevent the student from ever doing anything. But I am not advocating for this. I am advocating for instructors to be present for the preflight inspection. And to teach by asking questions. Do ...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

There's a difference between not doing the walk around with the student, and not supervising the condition of the airplane you're going to fly in. Making sure they understand the importance of the walk around is part of the pre-flight briefing. Personally when I was a student I despised instructors ...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

ALWAYS do the aircraft pre-flight inspection with your student. I can't believe how often I see senior flight instructors leaving the pre-flight inspection to the "lowly" student all alone, as if it is beneath the instructor's time and effort. The pre-flight is really important. Instructors should ...

Re: Advice for New Instructors

Is it reasonable to take notes on student performance? What sort of format is best? Yes. Don't be afraid to write such notes on performance in the PTR, it will save your butt if the student under performs and wants to come back at you. If you're taking notes in the airplane, don't spend a lot of ti...

What Bede said, particularly point 2. And... That point can't be stressed enough. Remember to always review how the exchange of control works. Even with (and maybe especially for) advanced students. Students NEVER initiate the exchange of control. They may ask you to if they need to adjust themselv...

Re: Cessna 172M Value

The price is inflated on 172s now because the flight schools and survey outfits are trying to scrounge up every last one of them to press into service. Even at 145K, its still cheaper than any trainer made in the 2000's.

People are saying there might be a severe shortage of flight instructors by next spring?? Mostly class 2s and 1s. Lots of people during covid didn't bother renewing. Not many class 3s want to upgrade with their eyes on enough spots still open for right seats. While I suppose you could say it doesn'...

3. Move. Don’t work there. Find a smaller company where you can stand out. Training captain? Special type ratings? Make yourself different. Take more responsibility— then get paid. Always remember though that pay comes after responsibility. And usually isn't commiserate with. Responsibility goes up...

Re: Calgary flying club , sky wing aviation, absolute aviation or centennial aviation?

So in other words, when I asked: Have you boiled it down to these? You should have said "Yes". For future posters and askers of these kinds of questions, it helps to provide as much information as possible. For example knowing that you are seeking a school that accepts international students is help...
