Re: Calgary-Okotoks flight school? (CFX2)

You taught for decades and you can’t figure that out? Here’s a start: - Basic Knowledge: Reading about aircraft manoeuvres, systems, limitations, emergency procedures. Aerodynamics, weather, navigation procedures, local area procedures. Etc. - Flight planning: Wx, NOTAMs, route study, map prep, docu...

I will add to that the issue that I always run into that for every hour in the air during a license, a student should be expecting to spend two hours of student-effort on ground related items.
Interesting comment.

What does " student-effort on ground related items. " involve?
Pilot stuff.

Re: Cannabis Policy ???

Comparing the military flying on go/no-go pills to an AC pilot smoking weed is apples to oranges. The military generally has a higher risk tolerance, the pills are not a recreational use, and the approval/issue/use is closely supervised by a flight surgeon. Amphetamines are also an upper, Cannabis o...

Re: Tinnitus

I’m not a controller but have the same condition. I fill out all the boxes on the annual medical honestly, so the examiners know I have it, but I have never once been questioned about it. As long as I go in the isolation booth and pass the tone tests it seems to be a non-issue as I’m still flying. H...

Re: 2018 CNE Airshow

When I was trained to fly helicopters, I was told that I was responsible for any damage caused by my rotor wash. Within reason. If people aren’t properly securing objects on field when they should be then the crew is hardly to blame. Any chance there is video surveillance on your part of the ramp P...

Re: 2018 CNE Airshow

Today I found out that that the SAR helicopter - or it could have been another one - blew someone's plastic deck box across the ramp with its rotor wash, and that deck box embedded itself in and destroyed the fibreglass tailcone of my airplane. But I guess that just can't be helped. That sucks. Sar...

Re: Should there be a "Rate My Flight Instructor". com website?

The problem with rating systems is often the people doing the rating are not objective, and often speak out of ignorance. For example... if you ever want a good laugh, you should read the one star ratings for national parks. This. How can a student objectively assess the performance of an instructo...

Re: Should I find a new instructor, or is this a normal first few lessons?

Fire him and very clearly explain why to the CFI. Consider switching schools. And don’t cheap out...you generally get what you pay for. He’s not letting you do the starts/ground handling/shutdown. He’s not letting you fly very much. He’s not providing “feedback”. In other words, he’s not instructing...

Re: 2018 CNE Airshow

I was on the ramp when an SAR Cormorant landed then hover-taxied, at walking pace, for six minutes, grit-blasting mine and everyone else's tied-down aircraft. Does that count? Sure, it counts. Could have said so without the whining. Snowbirds, Demo-Hornet, & Harvard 2 should be there. So, to be sur...

Re: Post PPL.... Now What?

Is joining the Airforce a reasonable route in cost benefit analysis? Depends entirely on you and what your priorities are. Free flight training and salary as follows (including during training). Assuming no significant wait during pre-wings training and getting out 7 years after wings: Year 1: $48,...

Re: Where to begin

Our Airforce. Its a 310 instead of a 330; close enough. And most don’t even have 200hrs when they start. Upgraded to AC by 1200hrs, absolutely. And have their ATPL when they get out even though they most definitely have less than 1000hrs. Not a chance. TC is very prescriptive and surprisingly thoro...

Re: Where to begin

I guess by PIC the poster means PIC under supervision. Not the same as actual PIC - just a way to get the ATPL faster. Where in the world do they put 200 hour pilots in the right seat of a 330, then into the left seat at 1250 under supervision or not? Tell me now so I can avoid the place. Our Airfo...

3) You just got a bachelors degree which means you can be an officer very quickly and fly military if you'd like. A job at an airline is almost guaranteed after that. Not quite. I'm going to assume passing entry testing, aircrew, & medicals. From the time you commence Pilot training until you recei...

What type of flying interests you? What type of lifestyle interests you? "Pilot" is a broad descriptor with a variety of options. Regionals are certainly attainable as is a major Canadian airline; lots of people are there. Lots of people also aren't for a variety of reasons; weren't accepted, couldn...

I treat people as individuals, and do my best not to pigeonhole. Sure. Doesn't mean there aren't trends. My students are heavily screened and tested before getting to my peers and I, are paid to train, and have generally excellent flying continuity when compared to the average flight student. They ...

Re: Huge discouragement

I will apply but likely waste of time. If I can't get offered an FO position at EVAS or Air Georgian on 1900 I highly doubt AC will put me on a jet. I dunno..... you seem like AC material to me. Possibly, a few past crew members of mine are flying there and they were no better than me. You sure abo...
