Re: Register & Test your 406 ELT!
Mouser has an OCXO module available for CAD$47. Their cheapest GPS module is $20. I'm going to guess you can get both for about one tenth of that amount, in a sensible production quantity, which means that the price differential is really quite small. The price of the OCXO will depend on the freque...

Re: Register & Test your 406 ELT!
Pavese, every radio in your stack has at least one tuning crystal including your GPS receiver. And they are just as you described and have been manufactured like that for decades. Some radios have ovens for the crystal (or crystals) and some don't depending on the application and the required accur...

if you feel vulnerable, and can advocate for some form of continuous monitoring to be mandatory if you wish, but I will campaign strongly against being tracked by the government everywhere I fly for "safety" reasons. It is the Gov't of Canada who is advocating continuous monitoring, not myself. D 8)

Re: Register & Test your 406 ELT!
Im not sure there's much technical merit in those comments. Why is transmitting in bursts an issue? Your cellphone does it, your wifi does it, and your Bluetooth headset does it. How is a two year battery replacement such a bad thing? My Spot unit goes flat in about two weeks- so often do the batte...

Re: Register & Test your 406 ELT!
I was at the Barrie meeting as well. I was surprised to hear that there are about 14,000 406 ELT's registered and over 18,000 121.5 ELT's still in use in Canada. Other than a slight cost difference the advantages of the 406 are signifcant over the unsupported 121.5 systems. Jim If you are in need o...

Re: Headset suggestion
I've put a Headsets Inc ANR kit in my DC 13.4's over 10 years ago and it still works great! Never had a problem. I would not want to use an non-ANR headset again. +1 This is the most economical way to get into a good performing ANR, have been running two sets of these in DCs for years. Now they can...

Re: Montreal to Moncton VFR
I'm looking at doing a flight from the Montreal area to Moncton in a 172, VFR. Any suggested routes, places for fuel, places to avoid along the way? I'd like to stay in Canada, so not going direct. Did that a couple of years ago starting from the east in something a tad slower & with a tad less ran...

Re: Controller Sends Pilot Killed in Crash to Nonexistent Ru
The buzz elsewhere is that the controller had an airport icon on his display and directed the A/C to it not knowing that it was now a shopping centre.

Re: I'm thinking about building a Murphy Elite or Rebel
Good day to you all! I'm in the "muck" trying to figure out what kit plane to build. I'm looking at the Murphy Elite or Rebel but have not seen or flown on one. It does provide a compromise between speed and back woods play! A couple things on my mind, how firm is this company.. financially? What a...

obviously they haven't flown africa, but ya png is pretty brutal. In fact, if you listen to some stories on here, canada is the worst  In Africa, Monkeys, Lions and Hyenas chew the aircraft tires and wreck the stabilizer and other surfaces... then you might collide with a Giraffe I've hea...

Chances are you won't see one in Canada since LSA is not a Canadian approved aircraft "class". Same logic applies to Canadian OM aircraft and the US.

Re: Suggestions on flying while going to University?
Agreed, focus on the degree. Then when you graduate buy a plane and fly the crap out of it. +1 My advice would be work on the degree, fly in the summer or even better talk yourself into a work term job at one of the aerospace manufacturers. I didn't know I was interested in airplanes at that point ...

So, theres a 5 page thread on bonds.. but 5 posts on the potential loss of an airport? Well.. now we know whats wrong with aviation…. Rowdy, there's not much I can add to top your comment. While we're at it, this thread got a lot of discussion didn't it. http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php...

Re: A few questions...
We're on our third flying dog, each about 45 lb. All three would curl up in the back almost as soon as the wheels left the ground & sleep or at least fake it but when you came into the circuit they'd want to know what was going on. That was two-up + dog so no worries about the dog wanting to be PIC....

Very interesting post; thanks for taking the time to write it. That book isn't cheap! Amazon at CDN$ 308.50 and CDN$ 763.59 seem disconnected from reality........ $27.95 on Smith's web site, all 6 of the series for $99 http://www.carrollsmith.com/books/purchase.html Carrol Smith's books are legenda...
