Re: What is the best way to study for PPL written exam?

I'd add a 1b) to Hedley's steps: Answer the question in your head, THEN, look at all the answers.

Re: Color Deficiency

A former boss of mine had a "no night flying" restriction on his medical due to color deficiency, his case was shut, but he did (being a CFI) assist others in getting their restriction appealed and so on. I remember he mentioned that sometimes the tests are given in incorrect lighting conditions or ...

Re: Texting and Flying??

I've sent an SMS to notify the boss of a complete electrical failure and of my intentions once. Much more reliable than trying to talk on the cellphone in a noisy environment with intermittent signal reception.

Otherwise, there's a matter of etiquette and safety involved.

My latest creation is scanning the Montreal VTA, stitching the images and putting it in Google Earth.

Re: Career in Canada Vs. USA

I'd get both licences, know my reg. differences well, and work my trade from the North pole to the Rio Grande... All kidding aside, you would be in a particularly good position to work for an American leasing skydiving airplanes, following the machine from a Canadian dropzone in the summer, to an Am...

Re: Information about standard aircraft lights at night

If you're in a small Quebec village, the SQ has two helicopters. The RCMP has a few as well.

Temperature inversions, common at night, change the propagation of sounds.

Zico: C'est pas des avions privés non plus. Du moins pas au sens privé versus commercial.

Le terme nolisé pourrait être bon.

This is a common safety measure against spambots for new forum users to be unable to send PMs. Don't worry, it should unlock after some time or some posts.

Re: Diving

I dive with a dive computer that will actually give me a suggested "time to fly" time that is based on my dive profile. One thing I find that TC might take in account in its recommendations that certification agencies typically don't is pressurization failure. Does your computer? Other than that, d...

Re: FAA Medicals

Your nickname leads me to think you're in the Montreal area... If so, you're in luck, it's one of the cities where I feel it's easier to do the FAA conversion. Once you get the verification sorted out, you can write the exam at Air Richelieu in St-Hubert. (They weren't listed on the FAA website back...

Java cellphone aviation apps?

Much like the other threads for iPhone and Blackberry, I'm looking for aviation relevant applets, this time for a Samsung Impact, which is a touchscreen J2ME "featurephone". I've found two so far, one free, one pay: Aerotools: http://aerotools.hoshis.org/ last update in 2008, I haven't tried it yet....

Re: New European Rules Target U.S. Pilots, Aircraft

A particular parachute school at YPK has/had a King Air registered in the US that spent almost all of its time in Canada (until it went down after take off). I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the discussion, since it's commercial, while the above comments regard private ownership, but as far ...

Re: I bought a solid state drive

Money's a bit tight for me right now or that's something I'd be looking into. Especially since I already running Windows 7 and it has optimizations for SSDs that the previous versions don't. I haven't checked if mine's PATA or SATA, but you can get modular bay adapters and throw your regular hard dr...

Re: 80 hours groundschool CPL written exam "new topics"?

Good thread so far... Some new ideas for me, some points are already covered in our existing material, and some I had thought on adding. Hedley: I wrote our schools 702 manual and course material late last year year, and will draw on my past aerial work experience as well (fire patrol, traffic patro...
