Re: Cornwall aviation or elsewhere?
Agree with Diago. I was in the same position. You need a Multi rating flight test and an IFR flight test (or IPC) in a multi. Review the guides: http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/publications/menu.htm#training For the Multi rating, study the flight test guide AND instructor guide. For the group ...

Re: Stateside on route freq
Just browsing some more FAA publications and it appears there is an "en-route" frequency listed in the "chart supplement US" (all are available here: https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/flight_info/aeronav/productcatalog/supplementalcharts/airportdirectory/ ). Taking a look at one in particular ( https:...

Re: Stateside on route freq
rookiepilot is correct. There is no official common en-route frequency in the US (though the FAA reserves 123.75 for fixed wing air-to-air so you know there isn't a ground station on it. Ironically you probably won't find many planes on it either.). The only common frequencies they have are frequenc...

Re: ICAO Airport Codes
ICAO airport codes are designated by a combination of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and the country. ICAO provides the prefix (for example 'CY' for Canada, or 'EG' for the UK), then the country can assign the remainder of the 4 letters to their airports. Thus you get CYYZ or E...

Re: Road to CPL/MEIR
However, there's a requirement of 5hr instrument dual from a Canadian flight instructor and 15hr instrument dual from an authorized person that you would have to meet. Transport Canada’s policy is to accept dual instructional time with an instructor from any ICAO country towards the dual requiremen...

Re: Road to CPL/MEIR
As you've discovered, the conversion process is really meant to convert current and active pilots from one country to the other. Either get current (and IPC) and then convert or drop the non-current parts and convert the rest. Your biggest concern here is likely that you haven't been actively flying...

Re: How early can you renew your Cat 1
-Medical category change (3->1, etc), change of restrictions.
-Also, if you're living outside the country, TC can accept a medical done by an aviation doc certified by another ICAO member state, but you don't get a stamp. TC has to review, approve, and sent you a sticker.

Re: How early can you renew your Cat 1
TC does know, and nowhere on your sticker does it give an expiry date. They simply show your exam date and refer you to CAR 404.04 for validity. If you can show 404.04 and a chain of medicals that meet the requirements, legally you're good to use the 90 day period. The intended use of the 90 day per...

Re: Training cost(s) and taxes
Typically the effect is a reduction of your taxes by your (tuition and textbook amounts) * (the lowest federal tax bracket rate + the lowest provincial tax bracket rate), limited by your income. For Ontario this roughly works out to a reduction of your taxes by: your costs * 20%. Also note that a ce...

LPV is still considered a non-precision approach. ICAO has changed this back in 2013 to: LPV with DH 250ft and above are considered a non-precision approach, however LPV with DH below 250ft are considered precision approaches. I'm sure TC will eventually follow suit. Details here: https://www.icao....

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check
All I had to do was e-sign a consent form. Now that is a bit more reasonable. No cost to the pilot and a couple clicks (minimal hassle). Just make sure the consent scope is limited to something reasonable, such as a criminal records check. Someone is paying for the criminal record check. Do local C...

Re: COPA for Kids pilots now require police check
I don't trust anybody who has a problem with the background check. Its scary enough these kids are put in airplanes with pilots of unknown skill, let alone possible Pedo pilots. That is, of course, your prerogative. However, recognize the other side of this exchange. The pilot spent the time and ef...

Re: Mid-Air Collision Near Ottawa
Condolences to all affected. While maybe this isn't the best time or place to mention, I will anyways: I recently flew with a portable ADSB receiver and tablet that displayed traffic and taws traffic and alerts - it was quite impressive for the cost. Of course there are more proper panel installed s...

Re: Moving to the states but still working in Canada
The treaty text (should you want some "light" reading material): https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-trty/canada.pdf In essence: 1. The country in which you earn the income will always tax that income earned in that country. 2. The country in which you are a resident (for tax purposes) will tax all your inc...

Re: Cat 1 Restriction
Is this a normal restriction for a new applicant? Unless you have a medical condition indicating it, I don't think so. CAR 404.4 (6.3) should give you PPL privileges for 60 months (24 months if over 40 years old). I initially went for a Cat 3 (because it was less expensive), then up to a Cat 1 when...
