The Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs weren't particularly "clever or fancy ones."
Just sayin'

Re: Sheet metal workshops

EAA Chapter 1410 in High River is the group doing them in Alberta.

I did the sheet metal course a few years ago, really well done, run by Jack Dueck. I see they've just announced dates.

Re: Flush rivits

I'm not sure there's any minimum or maximum for flush rivets. For thin materials you'd dimple both sheets being riveted together, anything over .030 (for AN426-3 rivets (3/32") you'd countersink the material. If you're riveting a piece of thin sheet to a heavy spar section (for example, you'd counte...

Re: Air Racing

Krrave, I'm no expert by any means. FLY's comment appears to assume there's only one form of air racing, that being Red Bull. This is not true by any stretch. While I certainly appreciate the skill of the pilots and the spectacle of Red Bull, calling it "Racing" could be considered a bit of a stretc...

Re: Alt setting IFR

Your mode C transponder doesn't care what altitude setting you've put into your altimeter, it always transmits simple pressure altitude. ATC has they're own altimeter setting on their equipment so they're seeing all aircraft under their control with the same setting. It's quite possible for your alt...

Re: Plane down at Cooking Lake

PilotDAR, I take your points, and for the most part will agree with you. Just to add a few more details I heard on the radio this morning; the floatplane crashed around 9:40, the rescue crew apparently launched the airboat before noon, and immediately got stuck in the mud. The 'rescuer' is a local, ...

Re: Plane down at Cooking Lake

Radio reports I heard had him waiting for 5-1/2 hours. A local in a canoe finally picked him up. Of course the rescue agency said he shouldn't have done that because he doesn't have all the training they have. I'm really curious about what he was doing there. Apparently a Cessna with floa...

Give this one more post before allowing it to die..... Oil is starting to rally. Good for some, not so good for others. Hopefully those wise airlines did some hedging down there at 30 bucks. There is little doubt in my mind we will see oil over $100 again. Alberta will live and breathe again. Inter...

Re: Least-expensive IFR GPS options in Canada

DPM, there's another element to add to the equation. As it sounds you enjoy flying into the US, after the end of 2019, you'll require all the ADS-B equipment. "Out" will be required, the "In" part is not required, but is a nice-to-have. You would need a fairly modern WAAS GPS as a position source an...

For a brick-and-mortar retailer, have a look at Memory Express in Calgary.

Last time I was at Oshkosh (2012) I tried on all the top end brands. Bottom line you'll be pleased with each one, not a bad performer in the bunch. I ruled out the Senheiser as the sales guy speaking with me was a complete asshole. I eventually went with the Beyerdynamic HS 800 because they were the...

Absolutely true, DA20C3 Eclipses with G500 panels. i've got both in my logbook.

They were ordered and flown by Cooking Lake Aviation Academy, they've since gotten rid of them. The didn't do well with them, most of the students preferred the C172s.

Re: One year of being an owner

I'll toss in a comment in the 'wish I had my own plane' column. I'm a member of a flying club and renting is OK. I need to book a couple of weeks in advance to fly the Citabria, the only airplane in the club I have any interest in flying. A few weeks ago another member had a mishap, slamming the bra...

Re: Best flight training in Alberta?

One thing I would consider, and some may disagree on this, is that flying out of a busy controlled airport all the time will cost more due to the fact that you will be spending more time on the ground with the engine running. How about flying out of a non-busy controlled airport? This is why I like...

Re: Fuel/Mooring ?'s 182 on straight floats from YYZ-YVR in

Just an FYI, Cooking Lake closed the seaplane base a few years ago. The water level is just too low. When you come in for landing at the airport, if a canoe has crossed the lake recently you can see the bottom stirred up by the paddle.

Re: how can I improve my landings?

Seat position and runway width, will play a role in your perspective when you flare. This is very noticeable when landing at night. Important to look at the end of the runway, but is ok to take a 1/2 second to judge your height out the side. Seat Position, 2 time I ear this... I'm tall and my instr...

I'm having an airpark hangar home built right now. I looked into a steel structure, the steel building manufacturers make the prices look really good, however when you start adding the foundation the costs spiral up very quickly. I couldn't get a 45' x 45' steel hangar built for the budget I'm havin...

I heard a new one a couple of days ago. Flying Wetaskiwin - Camrose I heard someone on 126.7 end his position report with "... Conflicts (registration) (location)". He didn't use the whole phrase, just the word. It sounded like he was just too damn lazy to say the whole thing. Maybe he'll start a wh...
