Re: Favourite Type

I'm not picky. If I'm in the left seat I'm a happy pilot.

Thumbs up on the Arrow. I was taught to get out by putting my knee on the right seat then levering/rolling my way out. I do the same now in my Musketeer.

Re: When to contact Tower as per VNC

Legally, no contact required.

In practice, a courtesy call to let them know you're there and what your intentions are.

Re: Spin Entry Controls

When I learned to fly in Cherokees the spin entry was a power-off stall, then full rudder and up elevator to initiate and maintain the spin. Some Cherokees spun well. Some refused and would only spiral. Straight down at red-line speed is not fun. My Musketeer was originally certified for intentional...

Re: Choosing plane for PPL training

Correct. With two 200 pound bodies you can't fly with full fuel tanks in a 152. And since you're taking off at maximum gross the takeoff and climb out are somewhat leisurely.

Re: Choosing plane for PPL training

I'm familiar with the challenges of owning an oddball plane, since my plane is a Beech 23 Musketeer. Off-the-shelf components are no problem - an O320 is an O320, tires are tires, radios are radios. Other stuff can be challenging, expensive, outright unobtanium. Plus the fact that few shops have eve...

Re: Choosing plane for PPL training

Visit any flight school. You will see lots of 152s, 172s and Cherokees. Fly one of their planes for a few hours first. Owning a plane is rewarding - the first time I signed my plane's journey log was almost as memorable as my first solo - but it can be challenging. A 150 just doesn't have the payloa...

Re: Flying School in Vancouver for International Students

When I was shopping for a flying school I visited local airports, looked around and talked to people. One handed me a folder and told me to call them if I had any questions. Another talked to me at some length, much of it sitting in a plane out on the ramp. Three guesses who got my money. I did my f...

Re: Starting PPL - Night VFR + Multi IFR immediately after?

Multi-IFR is a waste of time and money unless you're a millionaire who owns and flies a multi or are flying professionally. Note that you would have to do your biennial renewal flight test in a multi, so you must be both multi- and IFR-proficient. Major $$$ if you're not doing it every day. Night VF...

The U.S. does, sorta. Many "second-tier" airports in Alaska (Juneau, Ketchikan, etc.) operate almost exactly like a Canadian MF airport.

Re: Joining downwind at CYCD

FSS at Nanaimo is advisory, just like here in Kamloops. Crossing midfield may avoid a conflict or give better spacing, but as PIC at an uncontrolled airport the decision is yours. A common one here is to fly the "wrong" circuit to avoid turning skydivers in to hamburger. FSS advise of the conflict (...

Re: Newbie here. Best flight school close to Port Coquitlam?

Since you live in PoCo, Pitt Meadows is your obvious first choice. Why not go there and talk to people? You're going to be spending a lot of money and need to know what the schools are like, sooner rather than later. When I was looking for a flying school I talked to one at Boundary Bay who handed m...

Re: ATIS Has there been a change in YVR area?

Different airports say different things on the subject. Pitt Meadows and Boundary Bay routinely add the note that the weather is below VFR minima, only IFR and Special VFR will be approved. I've never heard Langley do so. YVR don't, though phrasing like "expect ILS runway 08 right" says something ab...

Re: Another crash at Langley airport CYNJ

I learned to fly at Langley (LFS, back when Dave Parry ran it). The runways are indeed tiny, but with correct instruction they're fine. The school was adamant that if you weren't on the ground by the 1000 foot marker you had to go around. No excuses, no ifs ands or buts. Just do it. Now . You learn ...

Re: C 172 checklist Canada vs US

My plane's checklists were written by the previous owners and closely follow the format and content of the flying school that taught them (and me) to fly. They're on the long side. I'm starting to write up new checklists. The old ones are lengthy and don't reflect some recent upgrades (GPS, engine m...

Re: Headset suggestion for Aviation College?

There are so many different answers because this is a highly personal, highly subjective choice. There is no one right answer.

I did my flight training with a David Clark H10-13.4 headset. Earlier this year I splurged on a Lightspeed Zulu 3. I like both. Shrug.
