Re: Be wary of the accuracy of the logbook
I ran into this dilemma all. the. time. when I was instructing: An instructor would come up to me and be like, "Hey I know you have this aircraft next, so I wasn't gonna snag it so you'd lose your flight, but I'll let you make the call. The engine was doing that random back-firing thing again for a ...

Re: What do you wish you had learned before beginning flight training?
I wished I knew how to self-study when I first started, as well as how to manage money.

Re: Who's up for a challenge?
Taken from the Q&A thingy below the description: "To the person asking about it being put back into flying condition by students; I am an A&P/IA and former instructor at another school. School aircraft have been taken apart and put back together so many times the bolt holes are worn out. Even the be...

Re: Minimize planning flights where cancellation causes great disappointment
Great advice. I wonder how many incidents were caused because of the pressure of not disappointing your friends. Thankfully I have avoided most of that pressure over the years at the cost of sounding like a total wet-blanket. When friends come to me like, "Hey you can fly! Can you fly us to ..." I o...

Re: Need Advice
Only a year and a half? That's not too bad. The requirements for getting current are in the CARS, but if it's been less than 2 years, I don't think there's much you need to do to be airworthy again. Besides that, you could always do some practice exams with a program like NIZUS to get back up to spe...

Re: Accomodating ATC
There's so many amazing controllers across Canada, and I've really enjoyed working for years with some of them. Some of my favourites experiences have been in Edmonton, Sydney, Yarmouth, Halifax, Winnipeg, Fredericton, to name a few. The only one that wasn't great was this one particular FSS operato...

6'4" is. My legs are long enough that I'd easily lose them if I pulled the handles to eject.RedAndWhiteBaron wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 9:46 pm Wait, is 6 feet even too tall to fit into an ejection seat?

Re: I Always Wondered About the Arrow Manual Gear Extension
Interesting. I wonder if the hydraulic pressure was holding the gear up and was not able to be released. Not familiar with the Arrow, but I've done manual gear extensions in every type I've flown for practice or necessity. If it has a pressure release valve like the Seminole, perhaps it wasn't pulle...

Re: Has anybody given up?
I totally understand people that think flying might not be worth it and I recognize the legitimate mental health strain that comes from chasing the "dream." I don't think they're entitled, but rather that they are carefully weighing the costs and the gains. It took me nearly 8 years to get up to my ...

Re: Has anybody given up?
Don't give up. I had zero savings and pretty 'meh' marks in high school, which made it difficult to apply for financial assistance and scholarships. I lived in a rural area which was too far away from a cadet program. Where I came from, saying you wanted to be a pilot was almost like saying you want...

Re: Advice for new pilots.
I go for instructing if you can find a school to work for. Right now, it seems to be the only part of aviation industry that still has steady work. I instructed for years and was hired at a great company because of my PIC hours, despite not having an official degree. Maybe it will be more competitiv...

Re: V1 in small twins
Smithers is over one set of mountains and Terrace is over two with not much in between. Prince George is following shallow valleys and short mountain until you reach the plateau and you have Ft St James for a diversionary field if things go south plus the BC Rail right of way the whole way there. I...

Re: V1 in small twins
I posted this for the lad above who was worried about the one engine climb performance of the Seminole. But, just one experience, and it was not at gross. All up, may well be a different story. My previous post was more to do with climb performance on one engine based on the landing gear's position...

And how many 2’s did you rack up? All hail the Sky God. Lol... it's pretty easy when you've already flown over 1000 hours as an instructor, have a friend teach you, are familiar with complex aircraft, and have 24 hour access to aircraft. The price of rental is temptation enough to get it don...

Re: Multi ifr training hours
Most schools make you go through a curriculum that ranges from 5-10 hours, plus briefing time. There is no specific requirement though... the guide just states that you have to have had demonstrated competency in all aspects of the exam, and a letter of recommendation. I did my entire multi engine r...

Re: V1 in small twins
I flew 400 hours on a Seminole and if I remember correctly, it wasn't a speed we were concerned with, but the position of the landing gear. If the gear was down, we would cut power and land straight ahead. If the gear was up, we would continue a shallow climb and initiate the engine failure procedur...

Re: The Kobayashi Maru
I've trained and been trained in scenarios where you have so many failures that the aircraft is guaranteed to crash. We do it to see that the pilot will exhaust all his available resources, skills and knowledge and fight the scenario right to the end without resigning. Having said that, we don't rem...
