Re: Flying over the state of Maine
Make sure you get a discrete transponder code with FSS before you cross. You could get flight following the whole way but radio/radar reception is not the best at lower levels.

Re: Pull Early, Pull Often
A huge part of piloting is decision making to mitigate risk. Advertising chutes is intended to make people think that there is less risk and I think that undermines effective decision making in the long run. I don't buy that really. It's a safety feature just like any other, much like my helmet and...

Re: Short Field Landing
But someone, please, tell me, what is fundamentally un-safe about turning off the fuel on the down-wind as a training exercise. Boy would it suck if you had to overshoot due to something outside of your control, i.e. something besides your ability to glide. Such as another aircraft flying in the wa...

From wiki Originally Ordered 138: 98 CF-188A / 40 CF-188B. 15 CF-188A and 2 CF-188B have crashed since 1984, never during combat, killing a total of 7 pilots. 1 CF-188A and 7 CF-188B have been removed from operational service. Many of the crashed or retired aircraft are still used for parts as well ...

Interesting how flat the accident site looks in Picture #1 as opposed to Picture #3 Classic mountain flying illusion. The ridge line you see in #1 is not necessarily parallel with the horizon. Tilt you computer screen to the right to make the wisps of cirrus clouds parallel with the horizon and tha...

Not wanting to get into the whole debate thing about pot. But you guys are talking about legal and illegal drugs. What's your opinion on someone taking something like Kava the night before or the day of a flight. Perfectly legal to own and use in Canada and I know of no known regulations against tak...

Re: Kenn Borek Antarctic Cause/Speculation Thread
Well, that's just what I was getting at. I know what I would do, in the event I even bothered to press the little "test" button during my cockpit checks, and observed it was not working. I would probably say "meh" and get on with the day. Maybe mention it to the engineer later. Do they pack extra C...

Blower flaps are cool as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh8mn0DeKSs Check out about 7:55 for a 'short' take off. I thought it was neat.Colonel Sanders wrote: If you can't get that, fowler flaps.

Even if your aircraft is certified known icing you can still get yourself in trouble. I remember seeing this guy on a poster at an airport once. I don't know the whole story but I think they were close that day. http://www2.tech.purdue.edu/at/courses/aeml/airframeimages/windshield%20ice%20alb.JPG ht...

Re: SPEC VIS. question
. Using SPEC VIS - CLB visual to 1600 BPOC. this means you have to climb visual to 1600', so the reported ceiling has to be at 2837' (1237 + 1600) the 1600' is above sea level. I agree that the 1600 is ASL like you stated. In that case, however, would the ceiling not need to be ~400(AGL...in a meta...
