Re: Getting quantities of AVGAS for Hunting Camp

Not sure if you're in a remote part of Quebec or not, but regardless, $2.65/litre is pretty outrageous.

Here we have no choice but to buy 100LL in drums. It works out to about $1.90/litre, and we're 400-miles from the end of the road, 90-miles north of the arctic circle.

Re: PPL (on tailwheel) at Canadian Flight Centre

My tailwheel training was done on a Citabria at a well-known western Canadian flight school. Frankly, I found it pretty difficult, but I had only flown nose-wheel airplanes previously. When I got home I found my PA-12/18 homebuilt to be much more forgiving, so maybe there was an advantage to learnin...

Re: Sunwing captain passed out drunk in cockpit

"Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorance on this thing, because if anyone had said anything at all when I first started here that that sort of thing was frowned upon …. ‘cause you know, I’ve worked in a lot of airplanes and, I tell you, people do that all the...

Re: Looking for Ideas!

Reminds me (a little) of the days when I was a radio op/weather observer at Contwoyto Lake. The old Argus would fly over and, in Sonobuoy tubes, they'd drop same-day Vancouver newspapers, Playboy magazines and oranges into the lake. (The oranges didn't survive, and spawned jokes about the ruined pho...

Re: Looking for Ideas!

Although ... I think it's okay to fly your own goods and re-sell them elsewhere.

e.g.; you have a 'plane, you fly to your wholesaler, pick up your stock, come home and sell it in your store. Or to the guy who owns the store.

I think the seafood idea would be legal, but maybe not profitable.

Re: Built your own camp in the Canadian North

Good points! Buying an existing fishing/hunting lodge is probably the simplest route to living in the bush, that's true. Then you own the land or at least have a long-term lease. There's still the problem of making a living, though. An available lodge may not be a money-making proposition, otherwise...

Re: Built your own camp in the Canadian North

North of 60 is very, very empty, as you already know. There are a good many beautiful places where you can be truly alone. But .... Almost all the land is Crown Land, i.e. government-owned. Since Canadians are presumably "the government", it should be our land, but it's not that simple. There are a ...

Re: AWOS question re "ICG"

Us old folks will recall the remark "FROIN" for "frost on indicator". Of course, that was pre-AWOS days. The "indicator" was a piece of aluminum angle near the Stevenson Screen.

But that probably doesn't answer your question :?

IMO, they should all be named after people prominent in the aviation history of this country.

Re: 5680?

Thanks.

In doing some more research, it seems that Inuvik, Resolute and Yellowknife all have RCO's on 5680. So with Baker Lake and Iqaluit, that should cover my area pretty well. I'll have to try it one of these days.

5680?

Does Arctic Radio still monitor 5680 kHz? If so, does anyone know where the receiver/transmitter sites are located?

Okay. Thanks for taking the time to spell that out. I think I have the theory down pat - now it's time to actually do it.

Since I have to work outside I'm waiting for one reasonably nice day with temps above zero and no wind.

Home-built modified PA-12 clone. AME not easily accessible - I'm in Kugluktuk, nearest is in Yellowknife, 375-miles distant. Otherwise I'd get a pro to do this. I got my right mag back from a 500-hour inspection and repair. Now I have to time it to the engine. I have the tools but this will be the f...

The most recent numbers are from 2012-2013. The band received total funding for all programs including health and education of $34.9 million. If your population number of 1800 is correct that is $19,994.44 per person. Though you might not realize it, you likely get more than that from Federal and P...
