Re: Clarification on SPEC VIS
Mistakes do happen with these trainers, but are you sure you read the question right? Definately KIAS for category. GS is for approach FPM and time. Should send a Dauntless an email about that.

Re: Nov 13 southern ontario airspace changes
With less planes with functioning adfs's and now reducing the VOR's, I worry a bit about reliance on GPS. Also, what about the IFR requirement to have non-gps approaches at an alternate? That would obviously have to be rescinded at some point.

Re: Question on calculating minimum alternate requirements
You can't FILE your destination as an alternate, unless you have an permission and operating under an OC (604-705) 602.122 Except as otherwise authorized by the Minis ter in an air operator certificate or in a special authoriza tion issued under subsection 604.05(2), no pilot-in-command shall operat...

Re: TSB Report on UPS A300 Crash. Good read.
It was the poor operation of the technology itself that was a large part of the problem. The captain set up the approach wrong, in the wrong mode. Then, on autopilot, selected a destablizing descent of 1500 FPM at the faf. No hand flying at all. Throwing more tech at humans who can't operate the exi...

Re: TSB Report on UPS A300 Crash. Good read.
That's a bit callous, pilots did die, even if it was their own fault- nobody deserves it. At least there weren't any lawsuits, though if it was the States I bet someone would sue for lifelong pain and anguish caused by the mental grief of late packages.
Best we can do is learn from it.

TSB Report on UPS A300 Crash. Good read.
This is a great read about what happens when procedures begin to break down. I'm also a huge proponent of CDFA... my students, and everyone else is sick of hearing it. :) But hey, if it can happen to these guys...... http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/aviation-international-news/2014-10-01/ntsb-...

Re: Logging Night Time Towards ATPL
Doesn't have to be night VFR for that requirement, can be IFR. BUT- TC won't let you double dip when it comes to hood instrument, and night. Eg for the night rating, you can't log night and hood simultaneously on one flight to meet each of the respective requirements. TC doesn't let you double dip ...

Re: Getting PIC hours/ratings in USA
This is second hand info, but a pilot I know did most of his IFR training in the States, but didn't finish. When he came to Canada and applied for his group 1 he was told for some reason that a lot of his hood time down Stateside didn't count. No idea why. Possibly the qualifications of the instruct...

What is the viewfinder in the top middle of the panel on that IL-18? Visual approach guidance? Vodka Refractometer? Oh wait... it's old school peep show commie porn. Those pilots and their porn in the cockpit!! But really. Any idea? Edit: Weather radar apparently. Weird. Though I suppose the old sch...

Re: GARMIN 430 QUESTION
You're correct, it will start sequencing through the waypoints by selecting one in FPL, once you reach it, essentially activating the approach. This is what you'd do if being vectored to an IF for example. However, starting the normal approach this way requires: FPL, cursor in, scroll, DCT, enter, e...

Re: Constant Descent Angle/New Approach Plates
Case 1 (there is a FAF - CYKF NDB RWY 26): the danger in descending on a 3 degree prior to the FAF is that you can easily go through 2200 because of a miscalculation of distance using timing and a roughly estimated ground speed. Yes, you can say that you are always to monitor until passing ZKF NDB ...

Re: Constant Descent Angle/New Approach Plates
I guess things have changed since I did my initial instrument rating. We were always taught that you have to be able to prove your position before descending to the next lower altitude. In this case (without DME) it would be 3100' to YKF and then drop for minimums. At a descent rate of 1000'/min at...

Re: Constant Descent Angle/New Approach Plates
Photofly, you beat me to it regarding the outbound timing. While I'm not senior, and certainly not respected, ;) , that is the only way to do it with minimal equipment. Take a look at the NDB A approach into CYND. There is no DME, hell there isn't even a FAF, yet there IS a CDFA. The only way to est...

Any, ANY, company that has developed an "us against them" mentality when it comes to employees and management will eventually be destined to fail. No matter how big, or how small, and whatever the industry. It doesn't matter who's fault it is, either bad mgmt or a number of bad/entitled employees th...

While I totally see point of company and self representation, this is an example of judgement without context or repercussions on an Internet forum. Re: CARS for dummies
There's a book I bought a while back called "CARS in Plain English". What a concept, and maybe an indication that something is unnecessarily complicated and confusing if it needs said book written about it in the first place! It's not 100% inclusive, and somewhat up to the authors interpretation, bu...
