Do you have an "as or with co-pilot" restricted medical?

Post by JBI »

Without going in to too much detail on a public forum, I've recently lost my medical for a situation where a few different aviation doctors have opined that they are surprised Transport Canada didn't provide me with an "as or with co-pilot" or "multi-crew only" restriction on my medical.

I've heard various anecdotal circumstances where folks have been granted an "as or with co-pilot" restriction in situations that are analogous or more serious than mine. However, this is not information that is easily available. Via PM or in the forum if you are comfortable, I was wondering if anybody who has or had such a restriction on their medical would be able to pass along information on what medical issue the restriction is for and what Transport Canada Regional Office you deal with. I'm trying strengthen my position that an "as or with co-pilot" restriction would be appropriate in my situation.

Thanks for your assistance. Any information shared via PM will be kept strictly confidential.

I can't help you with the process of dealing with the bureaucrats, but here are some relevant regs:

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regu ... l#s-404.05
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... htm#424_05
http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... htm#424_12

There's also some information in the LRA section of the AIM. Many years ago, there was a list of available medical restrictions, and "with or as copilot" was one of them. I can't find that list now, and I'm not sure it still exists. however, CAR 404.05(2) and (3), as well as 424.05(3) seems to say that the minister can make up any restriction necessary. I would think that this, combined with the precedence of "with or as copilot" existing and being used, should make the restriction available to you.

Good luck.
