Soccer Team Charter Down in Columbia on flight from Bolivia to Medellin

Post by cncpc »

The Guardian reports 80 on board the Bae 146 that went down enroute. Six survivors. It was seen flying as low as 150 feet.

Anything reported on the maintenance of the aircraft? What were the weather conditions?

The report that I read first said the weather was bad. Both reports, including the one below, say an emergency was declared as a result of an electrical failure. There is a flight watch track in this next Guardian article, which says the accident happened 30 clicks south of Medellin. It seems to be in a hold or coming out of the hold/PT at the time contact was lost. The crash site is at a place called Cerro Gordo. So into a hill.

I do recall that Medellin is a difficult approach.

Now saying electrical failure is speculation. It was on the approach. Fuel exhaustion is also speculated. No sign of fire in the photos. Happened at midnight.

Rionegro is an extreme steep approach(Medellin)...
With our the DC-8 all the time, yes...but a British Aerospace 146 should have been a piece of cake! What ever could happen?

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news ... am-9355287

Nonsense there from Mirror:
The jet split in two when it crashed in mountains shortly at around 10pm local time (3am UK time), shortly before it was due to land.

The hero pilot is reported to have opened a fuel door to release fuel and prevent a huge explosion.

There were 72 passengers and nine crew on board the charter plane, which was taking the 22-man squad to their match against Atletico Nacional.
Few survivors:

Just before leaving out:

Without trying to be flippant or unfeeling, I had heard that a 146 was '4 oil leaks connected by an electrical fault' right from the start..

Yeah I hear that it as a Total Electrical Failure, but then again we won't know for sure until the data has been analized. That part of Colombia is very challenging, lots of mountains around. IMC coupled with TEF at night is not a good recipe. What a tragedy.

I see Summit frequently in and out of YEG (and over my house !!) with the type; its always a different sound than what I'm used to hearing fly overhead. 4 engine platforms of any type are becoming increasing rare these days. I believe North Caribou flys this type and Conair has at least one Airtanker and possibly is converting more.

On the crash, I'm just glad to hear at least 6 survived, by the looks of it, there shouldn't have been any.

OK, Curiosity got the better of me, I checked the CCAR.

There are 8 registered in Canada

Avro 146 Series RJ100 - 2 with North Cariboo
BAE 146 SERIES 200 - 2 with Air Spray
BAE SYSTEMS RJ85 - 2 with Summit and 2 with Conair

From the pics and the survivors, it looks like CFIT.

Definitely my first thoughts as well. Tonight's 6 oclock news reported the tail apparently struck the ground, broke off and the rest of plane skidded down the hill.

If it was out of fuel, it wouldn't be controlled. The fact that there was no fire supports the out of fuel theory, but I suppose it could also support the no electrics theory.

There is no wreckage trail that I can see. The aircraft is upside down for the most part, and it seems to have dropped straight down into that spot.

It may be that it clipped something higher up, rolled inverted, and landed there. Who knows. I don't think CFIT.

Ok, I see the post above. That makes sense. Wouldn't it have to be a high angle of attack for the tail to hit, or just the way the terrain worked out?

Having thousands of hours on type....my first thoughts go to fuel exhaustion.

Although they may have had some type of electrical malfunction, fuel had to be first and foremost on there mind.
