I believe that this pilot has over 5,000 hours mustang time and was in Canada recently at the Bagotville airshow flying in formation with the F-22 Raptor.

Huge experience and well respected on the machine.

From Kathryn's Report...."One witness who saw the crash told investigators that the plane was flying just above the level of power lines, traveling from northwest to southeast. The last action the plane took was to pitch upward and then roll to the left before it crashed, said Peter Knudson, a spokesman with the NTSB. But the investigators don’t know if the plane was under the pilot’s control at that point or if there were problems with the aircraft, he said."

Be careful out there.

Kathryn's Report website usually gives a much more personal accounting of accidents compared to the dry, technical sites that stick to the facts. One can end up feeling sad after reading the details on this site as it can be much more personal and bring home the human, emotional side of the crash.

NTSB brief interview here. The usual stuff until the last minute where a witness statement is talked about.

I have a bad feeling that this is going to turn into another case where it was a totally unnecessary crash. Pretty girl in the back being impressed by the pilot, no doubt. I would hope that one wouldn't allow her to do a low level roll with the highly experienced PIC following through on the controls as a supposed safety backup.

Of course with no CVR/FDR, how will we ever know.

That being said, I did talk to an NTSB investigator a couple of days ago and she said that there is no shortage of recordings from inside showing the crash. GoPro is one of her best investigative tools these days.

Lots of photos but hard to see much detail of the aircraft... Looks like a very high energy impact with very little lateral speed. Quite reminiscent of the Galloping Ghost impact crater at Reno years back.

You can see what looks like a trim tab on what looks like an elevator, but it looks like it's kinked in two places... It's still attached to the airplane, so maybe it wasn't an issue, but one wonders when similar results occur and witness statements include a description eerily similar to the Ghost flight path... "pulled up sharply to near vertical before rolling over and diving into the ground."

Others reported seeing them doing aerobatics at "high level." Maybe on the way back he dives down for a high-speed low run... "let's see what this can do..." At high speed, low down, a trim malfunction occurs. After that, they could have been unconscious passengers.

That said, the lack of twisting on the props could mean the engine quit at low level and high speed. A pull-up to gain altitude for a glide-out would be SOP, but it's certainly possible if one hasn't practiced that scenario that you could miss-judge the top of the roll-out and end up in a stall/spin. No witness report of a spin though.
