Re: Pitts down in Quebec
Accident report is out. High time pilot but with few aerobatic hours did a steep pull up after takeoff into a stall. Risky maneuver unless you really know what you are doing. Recovery attempt included up elevator at low altitude while stalled. Probably instinctive reaction but it will not work.

Re: Pitts down in Quebec
This whole accident just had a strange feel to it. No aerobatics involved, he got the speed up to 91 knots on takeoff and then pitched up and let it all fritter away. Without even looking at the A/S he should have had a lot of premonition of what would happen next. All the TSB is left with is “unfamiliar with type”. Maybe, but he was no greenhorn and had a lot of relevant experience.
Re: Pitts down in Quebec
The report seemed to indicate he climbed with a nose attitude of 38 degrees to 400 ft. I find it unlikely that at takeoff power this would lead to a stall or loss of energy at that altitude in a pitts. Especially given his speed built up over the runway.karmutzen wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 8:56 pm This whole accident just had a strange feel to it. As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Re: Pitts down in Quebec
The Pitts is a pretty draggy aircraft. It also depends on how hard you pitched up into the climb. High Gs and a high AoA will bleed airspeed very quickly regardless of power and especially in a climb.digits_ wrote: ↑Fri Mar 06, 2020 9:33 pmThe report seemed to indicate he climbed with a nose attitude of 38 degrees to 400 ft.
