KRnet says fuel selector issue.

I also found some reference to the original builder choosing not to use an electric starter. VW don't typically windmill so...

How reliable are those VW engines. Always thought it was strange to take a car engine and stick a prop on it.

Not the best to answer. But they're as good as the person who installs and connects it.

60+ years of practice putting props on them, still have a formula VW air racing class. Can't be awful.
