Re: Chilean C-130 Bound for Antarctica Goes Missing
It is hard to imagine what brings down a 4 engine turboprop in reportedly good weather. Flight control problem or inflight breakup of 40 year old airframe perhaps. Ice formation in the fuel? I wonder if the Chilean Air Force uses FSII fuel additive.
Re: Chilean C-130 Bound for Antarctica Goes Missing
Fuel icing additive not used since it has fuel heaters, the "H" model was not know for structural problems and wing box was monitored and had a replacement timed/cycle life. To lose hydraulic control boost means multiple failures and very unlikely and that failure usually creates a crash during an attempted landing although difficult to control they would have returned to the airport with deboosted controls. The greatest risk would be a prop issue which is likely the most common failure on the herc. They found the wreckage so possibly we will find out the problem or failure. Until that time speculation is just that. The crews are well trained (at least in the past) and did their sim training at CAE in Tampa.

An example of a prop failure on the Herc where they were lucky to survive....

some of their previous work. not saying they aren't well trained. Just that that may mean something different in South America
