Dude says he's an entertainer, wanted to make a viral video, and so wanted a reaction:

CBC of course is sympathetic:

LOL

Here's a perfect guy who should be grounded. Permanently.

Yup! He's proved himself to be a cabin safety risk. It seems that he's about to be interviewed on the CBC National news.

I believe this falls under the definition of Sabotage.

As per ICAO conventions this is covered by International Law and has a lot of prison time as a result.

Hope Westjet goes after him to the full extent of the law.

Out of an abundance of caution
really means that " As a simple employee, i am not equipped to interrogate this asshole and come up with the truth and make a decision in favour of every single person on the flight, but rather screw up a couple hundred peoples vacation plans and have the kangaroo courts slap a petty fine on this idiot. Once again, the innocent pay and the guilty are given a free ride !

Are you sure about that? This one hasn't hit the courts yet. Did you see the result of the one in court yesterday ?

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba ... -1.5452011

=====
In addition to jail time, both Iontton and Walker were ordered to pay $100,000 each in restitution to the court.
=====

Not sure I would call a fine of 100,000 petty

I’m not a doctor. What would or any other crew member ask him? How would I diagnose? What medical indicators do I use? Should I take his temperature? Ask him to say “aaa aww”? How do I trust him when he says he was in Wuhan? Or when he says ‘oh, just kidding!’ How do I use my judgement? What if I’m wrong and the whole plane gets infected? And quarantined in Cuba for extended periods of time under armed guard?

I believe individual passengers could also file charges against him.

Perhaps sue him for the cost of their vacation?

Really hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist.

Let's start with, "what makes you think that you have coronavirus?". From there you can ask, "have you been to china recently?" and "do you have a fever?".

Anybody with basic intelligence can recognize that someone who knows that they are infected with coronavirus will either a) not be travelling, or b) won't tell people that they are infected with the coronavirus.

It's like bomb threats: people that place bombs on airplanes do tell people that they put a bomb on a plane, just like people who smuggle drugs don't tell people that they're smuggling drugs.

He stood up, said to everyone on board "I just came back from Wuhan Province, the epicenter of the Corona virus. I don't feel too good". Which to tantamount to saying I have coronavirus. What would you ask? "so you say you just came back from Wuhan.. Are you, ah, sure about that?" Since he boldly announced this, I'd guess from his motives that a direct question "do you have coronavirus?" would've generated the answer "yes". He was intent on convincing everyone he had coronavirus. If he said he's sure he has it, without a medical testing lab and disease specialist Dr, what do you do when he says he has it?

That plane and everyone onboard could've ended up in a Cuban quarantine center, plane impounded.

The return to YYZ is likely a company protocol. Call stat Md etc and ask them what they'd do. Take a precaution? Or, roll the dice. Buddy is probably fine. Of course if he is sick, the consequences for the other people and company are significant. I certainly wouldn't want to be the non medical professional who gets to assess if this guy really is sick (I'm not qualified to make that call and would rather not be near him) or if he's simply mentally unstable or pulling a prank for his own entertainment - in which case maybe we should get him off this plane anyway.

A. Several people who were knowingly sick did travel with coronavirus.
B. Check the thousands of YouTube videos of idiot passengers announcing insane things in flight. Announcing this wouldn't be all that odd.

If you said you have a bomb on board, no one is going to ask a few questions and use their judgement to determine if you're serious.

I support the captain. I wouldn't want the liability for continuing to Cuba.

I really hope they hammer this guy, and good.

Lifetime ban. All airlines. It's equivalent to joking about a bomb in your luggage.

Then the next idiot won't do it. I certainly don't want this guy on my next flight.

I can't believe CBC gives the guy an interview. Well actually, I can.

Let's say he really was sick. The crew, without any qualification to assess him, figures it'll be fine. He's probably bluffing.

Then a bunch of people get sick. Some need medical care out of country. Maybe one of them dies. A bunch end up in quarantine out of country. Bring on the lawsuits and bad PR.

In hindsight, this outcome would sure makes a excess of caution look smart and economical.

(I kept referring to Cuba mistakenly. The plane was going to Montego Bay)

The captain is just being fed information from the flight attendant. Many of which hate passenger and want them to suffer whether it being arrested or having your vacation ruined for daring to be on the same flight as this clown. I'm sure if the captain was in the cabin he would have said haha very funny joker now sit down before you scare people and then continued on his way to destination.

Here's the solution.

Send him to Wuhan.
Hope he gets the 2019 Novel Coronavirus.
Pray that he learns his lesson before he gets better after a week and comes home to the same fame as Chair Girl.

This was what i was implying. Face to face interrogation like he had with the cops on the ground . 5 minutes should allow one to make a near 100% conclusion. If the conclusion is not near 100% then go back home . What if the situation is opposite. Someone in the cabin had coughed loudly 3 times and had red eyes, would the plane be turned back and everyone be quarantined for possible Influenza?

Every airline I know of has a policy which prohibits flight deck crew from going into the cabin to deal with passenger issues during flight. These policies were a direct result of the events of 9/11.

I hope someone makes a video of his face when he gets sentenced to five years in prison, and another one when he is ordered to pay tens of thousands of dollars to the people on the flight who had their vacations ruined.

No lawsuits. A court order so he cant declare bankruptcy and escape it.

There never seems to be any of these on you tube

What is *really* pissing me off about the whole story is this ass hat wanted to "Make a Viral video", caused a major and expensive aviation disturbance. So what does the media do? Have one on one interviews and plaster his name and face all over the place. That is what he wanted. Screw him, don't show his name or face. Just the unnamed passenger. Prevent him from getting the "fame" he clearly is desperate for. Let him suffer in obscurity.
