Post by PS-90A »

Anybody knows any details of this accident?

Secretariat of the National Search and Rescue Service of Canada thanked Russia for offering its spacecraft "GLONASS-K" during the rescue operation in the Western part of Canada.

In March of 2012 a search and rescue operation was carried out in the mountainous region of Western Canada's for a missing helicopter and its crew in distress. Information has been used from Russian navigation spacecraft, "GLONASS-K", which was launched on February 26, 2011, as it’s been reported by Russian Space Agency.

This is one of the successful cases in which Canadian helicopter crew was rescued confirming the practical performance of Global Navigation Satellite System being able to receive distress signals and transmit them to the Search and Rescue center, COSPAS-SARSAT system. It also shows the need for further development of the medium orbit Satellite System for Search and Rescue operations on the basis of “GLONASS” - Russia's Global Navigation Satellite system.

"Within the framework adopted by the Russian Federation's international obligations to participate in the International Satellite System for Search and Rescue, COSPAS-SARSAT system, in accordance with the Russian Federal Space Program for 2006-2015 it will be using spacecraft in low, medium and geostationary orbits", - noted in Roskosmos.
