Jazz Q400 Right main landing gear collapse YEG
Looks like right main collapsed.Re: Jazz Q400 Right main landing gear collapse YEG
Any idea if this was an older q400 because if I remember right SAS had a bad string of these a few years back

The 6 blades tells you it's a q
So does jazz try and lease a parked UEX Q now or fix this and be short for a month

The CBC coverage states that they knew they had a blown tire prior to landing in Edmonton. Sounds like they were bound for Grande Prairie but landed in Edmonton because of the known tire failure.
If memory serves, the SAS failures were ultimately attributed to SAS maintenance using an incorrect grease on the landing gear, leading to corrosion and failure of a pin or bolt.

Thanks for the contribution here... as the topic clearly stated so.leftoftrack wrote:The 6 blades tells you it's a q

Another close up picture of the prop going into the cabin....my paranoia of sitting in this area is confirmed.

We called the jump seat "the hamburger seat" in the metro... I'm shlocked that can happen on a Q400

Props (hehe) to the crew for getting safely stopped with no serious injuries.

I suspect the TSB will be investigating whether the prop over the bad tire should have been feathered before landing.
That said the gear usually does not collapse when the tires blow -- we will be hearing from TSB on that.
Actually the prop did not have much energy. A DC-6 prop went through the cabin and took out the opposite engine, hydraulics and other stuff.

Re: Jazz Q400 Right main landing gear collapse YEG
Just a question out of curiosity.
It appears that the aircraft touched down with the right main in the grass (intentionally?). There doesn't seem to be skid marks or violent yawing towards the edge of the runway. Is this normal procedure for this type of event?
I've always been taught that in a gear up situation that the runway is less damaging than the grass. If there was no tire, it would seem that the hard runway surface would provide a better rolling surface than soft irregular turf. Not trying to second guess but curious if a hard surface landing would have reduced the risk of collapsing gear?

I would wonder if using an opposite direction prop on the right engine would be a good idea. The blade bits would be thrown outward, instead of inward. If I recall, the SAS gear collapse was the left gear, so perhaps broken prop did not get thrown toward the fuselage.
