Best course of action for this individual?

Post by Piston_Pounder »

Say there is pilot, he has 3000hrs TT, 2000MPIc, and 2000 of his TT is Norther Experience. Also has his ATPL and a business diploma. No degree.

-With rumors that Jazz doesn't have much of a flow through to AC anymore
-apparently Encore has a faster flow through than Jazz
-Jazz has more options for bases across Canada
-Encore has options to bid for overnights in your home town
-Both now seem to have a decent union
-pay is relatively similar for FOs
-time to upgrade to captain is rumored to be quicker at Encore
-jazz has more equipment

Please correct me if my facts are in fact not facts. So with this in mind and Air Canada being the end goal for this said individual, what would one recommend to be the best course of action for this pilot? This pilot would also be happy spending a considerable amount of time at jazz or encore if they are upgraded to captain. The very end goal is Air Canada though.
Is it worth applying directly with Air Canada? Are they hiring from 703 operators? Or is Jazz or Encore the more wise choice? Or maybe the less researched route in this case, Transat or sunwing?

Of course apply to AC. Apply for the jobs you want, not necessarily the ones you think you'll get.

The goal posts at AC are constantly changing, So I don't believe there is a right place to get a job. You have to find a place that you would be happy to spend plenty of time with, because eventually, the music will stop. You don't want to get caught at a place hate and a seat you don't want.

Good luck

Ask yourself where you'd prefer to be if AC pfo's you. IMO Encore is the best option with being able to apply to AC as OTS and guarantee flow to WJ (again should AC pfo you).

What a fucked up industry.

AC has us thinking, rethinking, over thinking, and literally chasing our tails trying to figure out what they will do next. Maybe this whole industry is so messed up because AC is so messed up.

This should be placarded somewhere in Terminal 1

Not true. Looking at the last ground school of 40 (largest group I’ve seen to date) I would say half or more where from Jazz.

Plenty flowing, but the end of the PML 1 and FPML is at a crossroads of guys who have interviewed over the last year are now being hired but also a ton waiting to get on the new express carrier website to apply as the "checkbox" wasen't available to them.

-apparently Encore has a faster flow through than Jazz
Encore has no flow to AC

-Jazz has more options for bases across Canada
YYZ YYC YUL YVR
-Encore has options to bid for overnights in your home town
Schedules change year to year, month to month and day to day

-Both now seem to have a decent union
Same union... ALPA

-pay is relatively similar for FOs
Encore higher

-time to upgrade to captain is rumored to be quicker at Encore
I would agree

-jazz has more equipment
CRJ, Dash 8 & Q400 yes

CBAs still being hammered out at Westjet and Encore... nobody know what will come there re:flow in the future, so I wouldn't count on much there. Besides your stated goal is AC, not westjet.

Comparing Regionals: I would take whichever one... Jazz or Encore... or Sky or Porter... is better for you today and you think you could be happy at. 6 one, 1/2 dozen the other for getting you to AC IMO... maybe slight, slight advantage if you can get on a jet...

I choose jazz because if I got pfo’d, it seemed to be the best regional career choice. I did get pfo’d and I am at Jazz for my career. 2.5 years in an I’m an RJ captain in Vancouver. Would I rather be at AC? Yes, but this ain’t so bad either.

Nobody has mentioned the 704 or small 705 route. You don't mention where you are but from PASCO to PAL, you can go direct entry as a 704 captain with similar pay. After a year or two, you'd likely upgrade to a classic dash or similar as captain. Make respectable money while waiting for AC.

Or, I don't know, take the 703 job that pays six figures and see what happens? :smt040

Thanks all for the feedback. It seems like my indecisiveness is pretty warranted. I just need to get my foot in the door. Somebody's door.

I've been in the south for a while now, but I just don't get the hard on people have for the airlines.

Lots of other places where you can break six figures easily and not have to deal with the airline BS.
