Wasaya is hiring an "apprentice pilot", but none of the duties include flying airplanes. Apprentice AMEs fix aircraft, apprentice plumbers fix plumbing, etc. An apprentice pilot would have to be learning the duties related to being a pilot in the same way. If they aren't flying, they aren't a pilot; they're just a rampie. What's next, are they going to hire someone to wash the CEO's car and give him the title of "apprentice executive"?

Nope. That position has already been awarded to the apprentice pilot.

I'm guessing this is the next evolution of the "Pilot-in-Waiting" and was a make-work program for some newly hired HR professional.

It's a joke! At least North Star Air next door at CYPL is a little honest and call it for what it really is - Pilot in WAITING.

In my opinion, if they're going to call it "Apprentice" pilot, then have those new guys sit in the right seat of a PC-12 (if they're worried about their B1900s) and let them accumulate 3-5 hours each month on short legs. North Star does plenty of single-pilot flying on their PC-12s so it's completely possible to have the new guy sit on the right seat and observe (respecting weight limitations, of course, if carrying lots of cargo). Not only will the new hires be exposed to their future job function in a multi-crew environment and get a good head start to building time, their attitude (what is actually required in the cockpit!) will also show. And then decide if they're meant to make the cut or not. Simple as that! I'm sorry, but having the right (or wrong) attitude on the ramp doesn't mean you have the right attitude to be a pilot.

So cut the BS Wasaya, tell the new hires what they'll actually be doing!

Honestly, ours is more "apprentice" than wasaya. They're hired as ground crew/ part time pilots. They get their PPC and a few hours a month as suggested above. After 3-4 months usually, they're upgraded to full time FO.

Skycare. I know the reputation they have around here, and I can honestly say at least for the St. Andrews base it's undeserved. I am aware of problems in the past, but the chief pilot/ base managers aren't pushing weather, everything is weighed and marked down, is there probably a gallon or two of granny gas in the outboards? Yeah probably, we don't drain them dry with passengers on board but I'm not sweating 20lbs. Is the pay awesome? No for an FO is "industry standard" crappy. But it's more than Perimeter. Captains have gone up though and it's not bad. Benefits are good. There is a 1 year training agreement but it's not up front.
