Time to upgrade

Post by Jimmy2 »

How long would the time to upgrade to captain be for a new hire? Is it based on a matrix of experience and performance or are Porter pilots unionized and date of hire is how upgrades are decided? Thanks.

Upgrades are seniority based.

It's averaging around the 2 to 2.5 yr mark at the YTZ base at the moment.

Yeah, my guess was pretty close, actually.
With a calculator and the seniority list now in hand: the average for the last class was 2.56 yrs.
The most junior candidates in that class were under the 2 yr mark.

Porter isn't unionized, but it does respect a seniority list.
Looking at the Oct 01 2016 Seniority List, the most junior Captain flying the line was hired in Oct 2013.

There have been Upgrades classes in progress in the last few months; with the next one slated for early Nov 2016.
In the Nov class the most senior FO was hired in Nov 2007, and the most junior Apr 2015.

Overall, however, if you look at the 30 most junior captains, the average is 30 months (2.5 years) as mentioned before.
The most senior being Jan 2013, and the most junior May 2015; the bulk (middle 20) being hired in the first half of 2014.

As for hiring experience, they would prefer:
Direct Entry Captain: ATPL, 5,000 hours total time with 500 hours PIC on type or 1,500 PIC Heavy Turboprop (in excess of 44,000lbs MGTOW). Entry Level First Officer: ATPL, 3,000 hours total time with 500 hours multi-engine PIC.

As for upgrading, the VP Flt Ops, DFO, and CP look at the candidates seniority, experience/qualifications, and employment record (PPC/rides).

There is matrix when it comes to qualifications:
Option A: Minimum 2,000 hours PIC, and 500 hours on type (Dash-8)
Option B: 3,500 hours Total Time, and Minimum 750 hours PIC OR Minimum 500 hours Multi Engine Turbine PIC, and 500 hours on type (Dash-8)

Great info Grey_Wolf. What kind of salary can a new hire F/O expect and what are the options for living somewhere close to Billy Bishop on that salary? Or perhaps somewhere with easy access to the Island via public transport.

3000 hours and 500 MPIC for FO? I thought they hired guys with a lot less than that and no MPIC.

@Jimmy

Here are some of the highlights, as a Year 1 FO, as of Jan 2017:

85 Credit Minimum per month @ 41.94$/ Credit

Annually Salary at min Credit: Year 1 - 42,782 // Year 2 - 46,818 // Year 3 - 54,485

Crew paid 1/2 duty time or block credit, whichever is greater

3.00$/hour CAN per diem while on duty, including overnights

12 Days off per month

RRSP voluntary contribution, 1% matched by company for every year of service up to 5% by company

You can live anywhere you want as long as you can report after 2 hours of being called out

@Spirit

Yes, Porter has recently hired candidates with less than the preferred experience
