Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
Hi All,
I'll be starting my groundschool with Encore in January in YYC. Looking for a place to stay for 6 weeks for the training. Also can anyone give me some insights on how crash pads work?
please send me an e-mail at

Are you saying that Encore does not pay for accommodations during your six week training session??? wtf-How much cheaper do they get? I'm utterly disgusted by the industry in Canada at this point...Paid accommodation should be a basic part of ones initial course.

Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
Tell them you can't afford a hotel for 6 weeks and will have to decline the job.
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
Are you based in yyz? Or are you a commuter based in yyc?
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
If he is hired into YYC and the training is in YYC then no accommodations are provided
If he is hired into YYZ and training is in YYC the accommodations should be provided.
This is pretty much standard across the industry.

False, Jazz for example your permanent address could literally be next to the training center and they’ll still offer you a hotel for your entire training. I know of a new hire (yyz based) who even asked for just weekends accommodations for a quieter place while the kids weren’t in school, the training coordinator had no problem with this. I’d assume Air Canada is the same.

Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
No accommodation provided if you're hired for YYC. Food/refreshments during groundschool also not provided unlike at other airlines.
AC and Jazz both cover hotel costs for initial, regardless of base. They realize it's an incredibly busy and stressful 6 weeks, and they wisely choose to cover a hotel so you can concentrate on your training instead of stressing about a 2 hour commute into YYZ each day.
WJ has and always will do things as cheaply as possible with cost-saving more important than quality of training. I'm surprised people on here are shocked by this.

Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
I think one difference is at WJ companies you know where you are based before you accept the job, at AC / Jazz you find out what your base is and what you are flying after you start your course.
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
After going through the interview process at an airline, and getting offered a groundschool that starts in 2-4 weeks, it only makes sense that the airline should cover accommodation cost for the training period.

Oh man, I don’t know how WJ is still able to attract pilots.
This company is getting worse by the hour.

It’s amazing that one of our two flag-waving national carriers lags behind so many 703’s.
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
What about the other airlines where you know your base when you accept the job? Sunwing, Georgian rj? Possibly sky regional? What an embarrassment wj/encore is not providing accommodations for initial training
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
That's new. Why would you need accomodations if the training happens at your base, when you know in advance for which base you are hired?
There's plenty of reasons to complain about Westjet if you wish to do so, but this doesn't seem fair or logical to me. Then again, when has logic ever stopped a lynch mob.
Carry on!

Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
Just because it's your base doesn't mean you live there.
Re: Seeking accomodation for groundschool.
True, but can you blame your employer for that? The pilot is still responsible to report on time for duty well rested, so that could mean getting a crashpad. Why would that be different for training? Of course a hotel would be nice in that case, but I still can't see why that would be Westjet's problem. You accepted the job with a pre assigned base. Which, as mentioned above, is a pretty big difference between Westjet and Jazz etc.
