FSS Assessment - Am I stuck with FSS now?

Post by stephohsaurus »

Hi folks!

Very new here, so happy to find such an amazing resource with so much knowledge!

Quick question regarding my recent invitation to an in-person FSS FEAST Assessment at YEG ACC: Does this mean that I am/will be placed in the FSS stream only? Or is that something they decide after the FEAST assessment?

Any insight is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What stream did you apply for? (Sorry I don't have an answer to your question)

My guess is that yes you would only be considered for FSS as YEG just had FEAST for ATC in September and Bootcamp in October so the next round for that should be in April. I'm not even sure it it is the same format for the exams and interview process and if not then it's even less likely that they would move someone from the FSS interview stream into ATC. However I think they would consider someone in ATC moving to FSS as they in theory should have the overall competencies needed but not necessarily the other way around. If you do go the FSS route it seems that qualification rates are much higher and once you are in the company would be able to apply for ATC from within and if you failed just go back to your old position. FSS is a halfway decent job and pays pretty well too.

@Aguaymanto The job posting that I applied to was for ATC and FSS, and I honestly don't remember it having an option to select which stream, but if it had one, I would've picked VFR without a doubt, as that was the position I was most interested in. However, I did apply in October, so I definitely missed the ATC FEAST Assessment.

@moosetracks Ah, yes, I was afraid you would say that. I'm disappointed that I applied too late to make it into this round of ATC Assessments, but glad I'll be assessed for something! I know I did well on the Wonderlic test, I finished with time to review all of my answers and am fairly confident that I answered all but one (which I was only 80% sure about) of the questions correctly; so I felt like my chances were pretty good to move forward in the process.

Regardless, I'd be satisfied to get my foot in the door, and the FSS roles do sound interesting without a doubt. I will give it my all, and keep my eye on opportunities for ATC roles. Thanks a bunch for the info! I'm very excited about the prospect!

All that said, I am sure you can contact them to check that this in only for FSS. I'm not sure when they run those in relation to ATC or how different the process is. My email didn't specify ATC vs. FSS but they mentioned at the FEAST they were primarily looking for VFR and IFR so who knows: "We have reviewed your application and online test results for our Air Traffic Services training program and we would like to move forward in the next step of the recruitment process with you.We would like to invite you to an onsite assessment."

It does seem that they have relatively large numbers of people applying and while they would likely move or delay you for the ATC program right now you are just a number to them and your success is not on their radar at all. From their viewpoint I think they expect people take what is offered but don't necessarily hold it against you if you delay, just don't expect any favours down the line; which is why most people say take whatever they offer you. It also seems like they put their judgement above your preferences as I've heard of and seen numerous people put IFR or VFR first and get offered the other so if you put VFR first but they think you would be more likely than others to be successful in IFR that may be your only offer. My suggestion is to keep all of your options open with them but don't stop living your life and seeking other opportunities outside of NAV CANADA. You never know when the call might come and it would be stupid to turn down other good opportunities for a call that may never come, but if it does then ideally you are in a position to be able to drop your other work and pursue a job at NAV CANADA.

They only recently split up ATC and FSS recruitment, it used to be you apply for all and are considered for all. I suspect if you do the FSS testing you will only be considered for FSS but doesn't hurt to go through the process and see what happens.

I applied for ATC -FSS posting. I already appeared in wonderlic test and my status changed to assessment. However today, another application (JR-1459 FSS YEG) is also there in my workday candidate profile for which status is also assessment. I never applied for another FSS role. I just did it initially for ATC-FSS combined.
can any one explain what is this. It appears now as follows in workday:

JR-1459 FSS YEG
Applied Less Than One Day Ago | Status: Assessment

ATS NTL Air Traffic Controller - Flight Service Specialist
Applied 30+ Days Ago | Status: Assessment

This is how my Workday page appeared too, after I was invited to the FEAST Assessment. When you click on JR-1459 FSS YEG it should say that you have a task pending to book a date for the assessment, if you didn't receive the email. There is one today and one tomorrow, as far as I know, so hopefully you've booked yourself a date!

Best of luck!

i click on it everyday.. it shows no pending tasks.
All the best for your FEAST.

Even for FSS they use same FEAST process? I sent an email to NAV Canada and was informed that they will be modifying process for FSS. They created duplicate accounts in workday for those who indicated interests for ATC and FSS both

Hi everyone,
I just received an invitation for an in person assessment in YQX in a couple of weeks ...anyone else?

The email states “Please note, that this assessment is only for a career in Air Traffic Control”.

So I assume the FSS Isn’t an option anymore?

Thanks!
