On Tuesday, Carla Palkun, 41, made an impassioned plea over Facebook — where she’s a member of several anti-vaccination groups — for unvaccinated Albertans to get the jab after the virus tore through her family last week and left her husband, Chris Palkun, 40, in an intensive care bed more than 200 kilometres away.
“Those pushing misinformation are very good at making it seem scientifically legit,” Caulfield said. “They refer to studies and they use sciency language, and it can be very, very persuasive.”"
“It sounds so stupid now,” Carla added.
Timothy Caulfield, a University of Alberta professor and Canada research chair in health law and policy, warns that the volume and character of online misinformation makes it easy for almost anyone to get sucked in. Actors in this field, he explained, are adept at appealing to people’s fears, concerns, values and sometimes even their better judgment.

We should add a heart disease and cancer discussion board. We could then post anecdotes about people on their deathbed who wish they quit smoking and eating junk food.

Pair of young Manitobans, ages 17 and 24, die from flu complications, families say
Chief medical officer says deaths of otherwise healthy people are tragic but 'not unheard of'
A 17-year-old high school student and 24-year-old woman have died in Manitoba from the flu, according to their respective families.
Blaine Ruppenthal, a Grade 12 student at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg, died Monday after suffering medical complications.
Ruppenthal went into cardiac arrest twice on Jan. 7 and was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital, where he was put into an induced coma and received hypothermic therapy, according to a Facebook post from his cousin Mary-Anne Clarke.
"Doctors have concluded this was caused by the Type A influenza," Clarke wrote.
Kelvin principal Maria Silva sent a letter to parents and guardians of all students on Monday, saying a counselling centre will be up at the school for anyone who needs to talk.
"It is hoped that by providing a supportive place for expressions of grief, the students and staff will be able to understand and cope with the loss," the letter says.
"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of his passing."
Wonder if they got vaccinated… probably regret that! Shame shame shame on them right? Let’s make a point to everyone this could be you… imagine you pass the flu to your friends and family and you are anti vax! What a POS you will be!

Maybe we should. But then again, heart disease and cancer only directly affect those who made those poor life choices. Their burden on the healthcare system is also partially offset through sales taxes on unhealthy food and drink and sin taxes on tobacco.
Maybe there should be a “fully vaccinated” deduction line on your T1? 5 or 10k of “hey, you did your civic duty and thus won’t cost the state tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for your own stupidity!” That’s a great idea!

Or we can tie their employability to their willingness to take a safe vaccine...‘Bob’ wrote: ↑Sat Oct 09, 2021 11:39 amMaybe we should.
