Skype pseudo-upgrade July 2017

Microsoft recently withdrew Skype service from us. Apparently this is due to some sort of enforced pseudo-upgrade that Microshaft is trying to railroad on to users. This so-called upgrade seems to be a disaster:

We have been using Skype Version 6.15 (335) for Mac OSX. It worked fine until we were recently cut off. We have no complaint about its ease of use, quality of calls or reliability. No "upgrade" was needed for functionality except to add serious end-to-end encryption to keep conversations secure and confidential. Failing this genuine upgrade, we would just like our Skype to work again.

Is anyone able to explain the differences between Skype Version 6.15 (335) which worked fine until recently and the pseudo-upgrade offering of Version 7.37.0.103 for Mac, which I believe is the current July 2017 version? Since MS is making unneeded changes to something that worked fine then it would be nice to know what those changes are. I have tried online searches and the Skype website but am unable to find the differences.

For the record our iMac and MacBook Air both have OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks. We see no need to “upgrade” OSX. Indeed we tried Yosemite on the iMac for three months and found it to be such flakeware that with considerable difficulty I managed to revert to Mavericks.

Microsoft should just provide access for previous versions of Skype! All the users and media would then be happy.

The current macos version is 7.56, so I think you might have an older version. It seems to mostly still work fine, except notifications seem to be a bit screwed. It doesn't always seem to send notifications for new messages if you've been offline, but they say they're working on this (at least, for Android).

You really should upgrade to the latest version of macOS. There isn't any significant difference in functionality, but you will be protected against malware and hacking, which is the biggest reason to upgrade.

Scroll down my friend, and read Carrier's rant on how Apple is dooming it's users to viruses and malware by not supporting older/obsolete OSs...

Same as Microsoft with XP. Same as virtually all Android devices, unless you have a Google Nexus device. Same with iPads. (My iPad 2 is basically a brick, as it can't be updated any more).
