J3 vs C172

Comparing a J3-C90 to a C172....any experiences, opinions?

Thinking about making a change, wondering what those with some experience in them think. Just to save arguments, I am considering an O300 powered C172, not an STC'd 160 or 180 or more steroided C172.

Thought it might be a fun discussion for Mid summer in Ontario....

Cheers all

Shawn

That's a really pricey engine come overhaul time.

Assuming they are both on floats you are going from one cheap 2 place airplane to a more expensive to operate slightly faster but poorer performing out of the water airplane

The Cub is a real fun airplane but if it is on floats don't fly it off salt water.

While that’s true, for the average private owner I think the O-300 will probably give you a lot less trouble all that time until then if compared to it’s O-320 brethren.

If you want it to fly like the J3, get the sportsman STOL on the 172. It’s somewhat transformative of the Cessna’s off the ground/water characteristics.

I was wrong. I found out today the C172 i am interested in has an O320 in it. Which I guess is good news. ..but probably not much difference performance wise.

I would be treating the 172 as a 2 seater with more cargo than a cub so I don't have huge expectations, I don't think. ..

I’m a J-3 fan but your mission profile suits the 172 best.

She’ll be a bit of a dog off the water though!

To paraphrase Geddy Lee: five horsepower is five horsepower. :D
