Hi,

Looking at purchasing some used avionics for my certified aircraft. I’m trying to figure out what documentation is required to make these parts legal. I’m not looking for STC info, but maintenance release info requirements.

Specifically: if coming from the US, is an 8130 required? Will a tag indicating registration, date removed, and an A&P/IA signature on a tag suffice?

Thanks!

8130-3 would be ideal, you might have to get a tagged part recertified.

Would it need to go back to the manufacturer for that to happen, or can an avionics shop bench test it and release it on a Form 1?

Appears that if it's tagged with, at the very least, the aircraft registration it was removed from and still has the original manufacturers labels on it, it should be able to be re-certified by an avionics shop?

I'm clearly not an AME and just looking to learn and hopefully benefit!

AN 8130 just cant be beat....any avionics shop can test and issue one.

However - A yellow tag with aircraft registration and a signature will do. As long as the data plates are installed on the unit. The key here is to provide traceability.

the answer is... it depends

if it is something like a single radio and you're having a private ame (freelance not working under an amo) you'll likely be fine with a tag. if you're having it installed by an amo you may be fine with a tag if you've bought the unit from a vendor with approval from the amo, and the amo might have tighter restrictions than cars
