Dual G5 installation - AME license

Post by Crak »

Good evening all,

We are currently in the process of installing 2 G5s (not integrated to anything yet). Since most avionics shops are overloaded those days, our AME proposed to do the job if we can procure a prefabricated harness.

Not sure where we stand in line of the regulations on this, so I'm trying to get some feedback, can an AME (not E rated) do such install ?

Thx,
Crak

It depends on the system checks required after install. The stc should be pretty clear on whatever airframe you’re installing them into. An M1/M2 licensed AME does have E privileges to a certain extent. More information on your guy’s qualifications and the aircraft as well as the AMO’s rating would help in the answer.

The answer is in regulation 571.04 and Schedule II to it. It's specialized maintenance and must be performed at an appropriately rated AMO. No AME working on their own would be permitted to install what you want, no matter what certification they have.

Not an AME their own. It depends on the STC. One way to get around it is to install them as standby leaving original instruments installed.
