Hello to everybody. Im new to this forum & would like to tell the newbies out there that this Canadian aviation world is not as bleak as portrayed in some of the posts described here. Yes, I agree that fixing automobiles at some dealership will pay more; on a side note - the mechanics here (where i live) at the BMW dealership are useless if they have to perform anything more than change the oil or change the brake linings. Who would want to spend their lives getting 'real good' at brakes & oil changes. In my 30 years - I cannot describe all the adventures ive seen across this country & all the friends (mostly friends) that i have made! If your primary motivation is money .. then im talking to deaf ears .. but if you are passionate about aviation - money is never a problem .. A good AME with a good reputation is always employed .. Ive done my time sleeping on the living room floor in a sleeping bay in Yellowknife; Even dried out wet wing fuel tanks with a hair drying - until the brain clicked in. Blew myself up cleaning insides of floats with MEK & incandescent lightbulb; & coughed up paint stripper at 2AM for a few months .. Never resented it .. considered it a 'right of passage' Then there were the good times such as Air Canada Heavy / weekend crew - best buds you could ask for. Out in the Hot-tub at this Lodge where i was maintaining a beaver; or swamping for this fuel haul - rolling fuel barrels in & out of this float beaver out in the most gorgeous wilderness you could find! ..Its all what u make it! .. & the most satisfying was when that aircraft (that got delivered in a bunch of crates - a few months ago) flies away in better condition than new ! - Stuff no Dealership mech/ oil change specialist could even dream to do!

I think your mek incident had other effects on you.

Love the millennials !! .. dealing with them everyday. Can never see one physically working or comprehend what they are doing (when u see them in passing); they usually disappear throughout the day & reappear only at coffee & lunch & always 10 minutes prior end of shift!! .. but they will always answer an email within seconds! Makes u wonder how they manage to climb off that AC, put down the tools & type in a reply all within 10 seconds .. They are just amazing people!

That may have something to do with your location. I would come on rotation or contract, but not full-time. 23 years in Yellowknife 2 vacations. In most cases, engineers get paid way less than when rests on our shoulders, hence wages are the number one driving force why people motivate themself to enter that field - and get disappointed. Even as a contractor, they have the gust paying us 35,00 per hour while full well knowing that this is a business and not employment.
I would say, make a decent offer, take care of travel and logistics would be willing to work away from wife and home.

I am almost certain that it is not you or your company that is to blame on the issue. Anyone looking into working for you also will notice that Thunder Bay is a location to be get used to. I have been driving through a few times now and the condition of this town, would not make me move there if I had children to raise. Luckily, I dont. So I might be interested.

anyone deal with runway lights have tips for troubleshooting and finding bad power packs?

and strobes?

dealing with stuff that hasnt been maintained in 10+yrs and its starting to flake

like are the pits with lids supposed to be berried that have the power transformers and plugs in them?
just dug them all up as the runway lights here quit found one unpluged after pumping the water out

doesnt seem to be any spec out there on any of this stuff

The constant ads fro AME’s, AME’s “without a licence”,(whatever that means, Journeymen AME’s, and just plain heartbeats makes me wonder. What is happening in aviation? Is it expanding? Are people quitting in droves? What is going on in the biz these days? Desperation? Enquiring minds want to know. Seems to be from all the usual bottom feeders plus the odd midwater feeder.

Contract offers arenot even what they were 10 years ago, in either quality or quantity, yet almost anybody I talk to goes on about how shorthanded they are and you see the same ad's repeated here.
