How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
Im debating between a unique training opportunity at Langley or going to YSE for my training (PPL).
My question is how many hours a week and how did you structure your flight training during your PPL?

I booked an hour flight, the first appointment of the day on Mon wed and Friday. Usually got two of three flights in. Not sure what you mean by "how did I structure the training".

I mean, how quickly did you go through ground school, and the flight training.
Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
I self-studied the ground school, and on average booked one one-hour flight a week for a year. Bookings were made two or three weeks in advance to ensure a regular time slot, and only a few had to be missed due to weather.

Air Cadets... Seven Weeks for the whole thing.

Likewise. We had nice weather my summer so was able to finish in 6 weeks.all_ramped_up wrote:Air Cadets... Seven Weeks for the whole thing.

Ideally, you'd fly twice a day, every day. A week between flights is quite a bit - you'll spend a portion of each flight shaving off the rust from the last flight before you make any progress in advancing. One step back before any steps forward. Recency and currency are key aspects of training. If two a day is moving ahead too fast to keep up with doing a proper, FULL pre-flight preparation and study so that you know ALL prior to the briefing and the aircraft is merely used to practice and develop skills that you already fully understand conceptually, then maybe reduce to one flight a day. If you're not putting the time in to study and prepare fully for each flight, then it's a waste of flight time in my opinion.

i was in high school all week, worked 2-3 nights in a resturant to pay for an hour or two each weekend.

An hour per week when I was working. Sometimes between jobs I would go a few months without flying. So 1 or less, guess I'll vote the closes option.
It's a little like paddling a canoe up stream on a gentle creek. Every time you stop you get behind where you were.
I did ground school once for ppl but I had to study quite a bit.

This has been a brutal winter for getting wheels up for my PPL training in Toronto.
Hopefully, my relo to BC will be met with more flight time.

The west coast isn't much better in winter. This week has been good, but overall winter here is pretty shitty for flying VFR. Things will gradually improve over the next month, and from April or so onwards it should be VFR almost every day.geneticistx wrote:This has been a brutal winter for getting wheels up for my PPL training in Toronto.

I started my ppl last week of April. Finished first week of December last year. This was scheduled around my shifts, family obligations and other extra curricular life events. Some months i flew 3 times a week some were only once a week. I did better when i flew more often. I bought an old C172 before I solo'd so i got up more regularly than most probably wold have. I loved every minute of it. Even the hours trapped in the circuit.

How i wish i did it this way. Maybe my life would be far different now. I am pushing my kids to go this route. My oldest is already a corporal at 13. He is keen to train. I hope he does it is a great program. And it will save me money and gas!
Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
Once every 3 weeks untill I told my instructor I was going to find another instructor. Then it went up to 2 flights a week. Usually one solo and one dual. I think I had 40 hours solo and 30 dual when I did my PPL flight test. In retrospect, I think he just sent me solo to get rid of my nagging to fly more.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Once a day until I solo'd. Then twice a day. One solo, one dual. Until I did my ride.
Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
5 weeks. Solo'd after 4 days, and wrapped up the night rating by week 6 with the Cadet program.
I wouldn't track it against Cadets because they are gradually studying from Age 12 to 17 before starting training. If you hit the books hard before you touch anything, you can keep up with the Cadet pace. My advice is to NOT rip through training that quickly, but fly at least 5 days a week, keep at it, and never let it become stressful for you! Enjoy the training!

Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
I averaged 1 to 2 hours per week (weekend warrior style) while working a full time job. Flying more frequently is desirable, however if that is not possible, you have to become creative and do some chair flying to stay on top of procedures and such...
The whole process took me approximately 7 months.

Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
Oh, and if you want to keep your time low, find an instructor you get along with and book them for every flight. That way you won't waste half of every flight teaching the new instructor what the last instructor taught you on the last flight.
Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
Five to seven flights a week until solo, and additional study time each day. This should continue until ground school and written exam are done. After that, hours will come quickly in the cross-country stage. In work-up to flight test more frequent flying is a good idea. You only need 45 hours of flying if your training is efficient, but there are a few hours of book work to make each hour worthwhile. This way should take approx 8-9 weeks for a PPL.
Re: How many hours a week did you fly during your PPL training?
I just recently started my PPL training. So far doing around 2 hours per week on average. Will try to do at least 3 hours per week later when weather will be VFR friendly.
