If you can get the right someone to approve the programme, sure.

Not hard at all! There are many smaller FTU's that do not have enough students or staff to run dedicated classroom lectures so they use a combination of homework, self paced study with training manuals or online study etc. As long as the FTU CFI approves and the self study times are getting documented properly and signed for in your PTR this is quite acceptable.

The "right someone" photofly is referring to is the CFI at your FTU - get his or her approval and you're good. Just be sure to get this worked out and planned in advance and not "after the fact".

OK so now you have to find another school or freelance instructor.

It is important to understand as a customer that flying schools (flying clubs as well!) are first and foremost businesses! The vast bulk of their business revenues are generated from aircraft rentals and dual lessons, not from ground school fees. Therefore you will find that most flying schools and clubs will be very eager and accommodating to assist you if you wish to complete ground school based on primarily on self study. Just tell them what you would like to do and you should have no problems setting this up.

ALso some online courses you can pay for, all self study and then they will provide the recommend letter too.

Yes this is an option as well. I have heard however that this can sometimes create hassles since now you are using 2 FTU's at the same time.

Regardless of whether you prefer self study via training texts with the paperwork and recommend handled by your local FTU or online course with an external FTU and the recommend under their authority, just be sure to first consult with the CFI at your local FTU and see what they suggest in your circumstances.

I did self study for my PPL at a very small (one plane, one instructor) FTU. Basically my instructor would go over what I should be studying and go over questions with me before and after each flight. Then I just had to pass his practice exams before doing the PPL written. It may have been faster/more focused to do a ground school course but it really helped me learning how to study by myself and build future self study skills.

Yes taking sample exams is good: be sure to take careful note of which subjects are creating difficulties and re-learn as needed.
