ICAO ATPL to Canadian ATPL

Post by Ilyushin76 »

Hello everyone. I've been in and out of Canada for some time now and I was thinking of converting my ATPL to the TC ATPL.

Briefly stated, I have 1000+ hours on the Airbus 320 and basic training plus the instructor rating on single engines. Got picked up to fly jets directly. P.S - it was not a p2f program. Just a freak opportunity that was availed :)

Is it possible to convert my license to TC in an A320 sim environment? It has been many years since I've flown a single engine and I suppose the flying would be a bit challenging given that my experience on jets is far more than SE. Associated costs are manageable.

I am just concerned that since I have flown jets, I may have issues in flying props as I lack the ''currency'' on non automated aircraft.

Expert advice is welcomed.

I just converted my ATPL licence 4 months ago. I heard something about the possibility to prove the skills requirements on a SIM level C or D. The flight test must be on controlled airspace, so I'm not sure how the SIM will be an option.
I did my multi/IFR in 2005 and flew senecas in 2006 and 2007. So, a long time ago. After that, I just flew big turboprops (ATRs) and can say that is not easy to go back to light piston twins. Also, my last flight was in 2016. After a few months working on the written exams, I did 4 sims lessons + 1 training flight + another training flight to get a recommendation and the flight test. It's doable, but for sure you will have to work hard.
They don't expect you to be a pro on the light twin, but you have to know your speeds and procedures. Also, expect some limitations questions on the ground briefing and you will get 3 emergencies on the flight test. One, of course, will be a single engine + 2 "surprise" ones.
Good luck and if you want, PM me so I can send you the contact of the TC lady that took care of my conversion. She is a licence specialist in Toronto and for sure can answer your question about the possibility to do it on a SIM.

Thanks for sharing that info Igor. It's a great help. I just registered as a member of this forum and it doesn't allow me to send PM's. Can you please try to send me a Pm with the contact info of the TC lady in TO and hopefully that works. :)

Hello Everyone, I'm looking to convert a New Zealand CPL (TT 300 Hours) to a Canadian CPL. Thanks for the info so far, and I've just joined the forum so can't yet send DMs. Would be great if I could get the contact of the consultant who guided you through the conversion process. Thanks!

Hi there, I also have a newly created account and cannot directly PM you.
If possible, could you please forward the TC Lady's contact - I'm currently in the process of converting my ICAO ATPL towards a Canadian ATPL, and have a few questions regarding my flight time and requirements (As nearly all of it is on the Airbus).

Cheers
