Relate it to what they already understand - driving a car.
When you drive a car around a corner fast, you feel that you get pushed to the outside.
However, an airplane goes "around a corner" (ie turns) like a bicycle or motorcycle - you "lean into" the turn, so that you don't feel any side forces - it pushes you down into the seat, in addition to your normal weight. Relate this to "stepping on the ball".
So, the tighter the turn, or the faster you go "around the corner", the more you get pushed down into your seat.
