2 years or 4?

2 years need to do a flight test (some sims are approved or airplane)

4 years inrat and everything else.

I think you're saying that your instrument rating
has been expired for more than one year, but
less than two years.

CAR 421.49 applies:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... htm#421_49

Specifically CAR 421.49(1) says you need to do
a flight test.

para (2) through (9) do not appear to apply to you.

Another really useful publication to look at is TP 9939E:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... nu-965.htm

Specifically, "Admission to Flight Test - Renewal":

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... l-4886.htm
In order to be admitted to a flight test required for the renewal of an Instrument Rating, the candidate will present:

1.a valid original government-issued photo identification with signature;

2.a valid Pilot Licence; and

3.proof of holding, or having held within the previous 24 months, a valid Canadian Instrument Rating.
Your licence booklet will satsify (1), (2) and (3) above.

Hey guys thanks for your answers.

So my rating was valid til January 2013 as I did my last renewal in December 2010.

Do I need to write the inrat? Or if I find work a ppc or pcc would renew the whole thing?

Cheers

No you do not need to write the inrat. Either a Instrument flight test or a PPC for IFR ops would renew. A PCC does not renew your IFR

im in the same boat here too. so just to clarify

i did my last ifr ppc ride in December 2011. my ifr ppc expired after a year, but after that time if i continue to do the 6 6 and 6 my ifr would stay valid for 2 years from my ifr ride (jan 1 2014)? then after that time i have 2 years (till jan 1 2016) to renew it without having to write the inrat, then after that time i would have to rewrite the inrat before i could renew my ifr? is that correct?

However the PCC does continue your IFR in that it eliminates the requirement for the 6,6 and 6 recency requirement for the second year of your IFR validity.
