Can you switch fleet types?
Hello,
I am curious about how fleet type at Air Canada is chosen and switched. I know that seniority is out of a hat during the recruitment process and you make a sort of list of what you want to fly for equipment and bases but what if you are awarded lets say the Embraer when you want the A320 or in the future if you are awarded the 737 but you want the CS300, Is there anyway to trade or even wait untill the type you want is available? Also, one more question, if you eventually want to fly long haul how long do you have to fly on the narrow body fleet before you can take the right seat in a 787?
Thanks in advance for all your answers!

Re: Can you switch fleet types?
I think the course rights subject has been covered fairly fully on various threads.
In fact 2 threads below this one on this Air Canada subforum I covered it.

You can't wait to get the type you want for your initial course. You won't know what's on offer until about a week in.
Based on current seniority levels, plan 4-5 years for the 787 in YYZ/YUL, 7-8 for YVR.
Immediate options fur overseas though - 737 in YUL will be doing overseas - that's new hire. 330 in YUL is basically new hire, and they're getting more. 767 Mainline in YYZ is new hire and while it's down to only a few overseas routes they're bringing some back. 767 Rouge is new hire. Or of course RP seats on 777/787 are all new hire. I hear their talking about bringing back 767/330 RPs too. Lots of choice...

Re: Can you switch fleet types?
Bit of a thread drift.
If you want to bid RP as a new hire, is it a pretty good chance you will get that?
And could you just sit as a RP in the 777/787 for 10-15 years-ish and then hold enough seniority to bid FO on the same aircraft?

Re: Can you switch fleet types?
The way things are going, guys are sitting 4-5 Years as an RP and transitioning to the right seat of the same aircraft. Don’t foresee too much into the future though. Pick what you want in an airline, the musical chair can always stop in a few years.
Re: Can you switch fleet types?
Is there a RP payscale? I only see Capt and F/O ones.
Re: Can you switch fleet types?
The first four years, regardless if you are RP or F/O on any aircraft, you are paid the same.
Re: Can you switch fleet types?
RP hourly pay rate is grouped, ie. status pay, and the rate varies slightly depending on how many hours each position flies...
Here you go.
Year 5 rates rounded to the dollar.
type/day/night
FO
330/125/139
767/119/132
787/127/141
777/140/153
RP
ALL/93/101
+overseas pay FO 7 / RP 5

Re: Can you switch fleet types?
Is there a 12 year payscale for RP like the other positions? I'm wondering if RP is viable for your entire career as I rather dislike flying.
Re: Can you switch fleet types?
Be sure to tell them that in the interview.
They will probably target you for a management position right away.
Or maybe the union is more up your alley...

Re: Can you switch fleet types?
Found this for RP:
5 -92
6 - 96
7 - 100
8 - 103
9 - 108
10 - 112
11 - 114
12 - 115
Seems to be about the same as an NB FO scale. It would be nice to skip the FO stage entirely as you are essentially doing the same amount of flying as a Capt but at much much lower salary.
