Aircraft Cleaning

In recent negotiations, the Company was willing to talk about aircraft cleaning (or “grooming” as it is commonly known), a contentious issue to a large portion of our Pilot group.

In short, after discussion, and with the aid of Mr. Kaplan, WestJet management and ALPA formally agree that “grooming” is NOT a Pilot responsibility while on duty. Further, we agree, once Pilots' critical safety duties are complete and consistent with the role of Pilots as leaders, Pilots will add value to WestJet by engaging with our guests from the front of the airplane.

Supporting our Crews

(shortened for brevity)……… Whenever possible, we must be willing to help lighten the burden of our support staff at Crew Scheduling who crew our aeroplanes, and at airports who manage the ground operations. You do not need to clean the aeroplane to do this.

Pilots are asked to discontinue grooming effective immediately. A unified approach is important for the sake of consistency among all our crews. CUPE is also supportive of this development.

This clarification regarding grooming allows your MEC to provide clearer guidance moving forward and represents a gain for the Pilot group. It is a positive movement towards re-establishing our position as professionals and front-line leaders within the Company. We ask for your unity and support in this position.

What? You mean that the "voluntary" cleanup on your own time is no longer acceptable?
