Perhaps the greatest aviation song ever?

Gordon Lightfoot - Early Morning Rain:

In the early morning rain
With a dollar in my hand
With an achin' in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
And I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain
With no place to go
Out on runway number nine
Big seven-o-seven set to go
But I'm stuck here in the grass
Where the cold wind blows
Now the liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
Well there she goes my friend
Well she's rollin' down at last

Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound
Far above the clouds she'll fly
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flyin' o'er my home
In about three hours time

This old airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
'Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain

How about a little CCR?

Seven thirty seven comin out of the sky.
Oh! wont you take me down to memphis on a midnight ride,
I wanna move.

Chorus:
Playin in a travelin band. yeah!
Well, Im flyin cross the land, tryin to get a hand,
Playin in a travelin band.

Take me to the hotel, baggage gone, oh, well.
Come on, come on, wont you get me to my room,
I wanna move.

Chorus

Listen to the radio, talkin bout the last show.
Someone got excited, had to call the state militia,
Wanna move.

Chorus

Oh! wow!

Here we come again on a saturday night
Oh with your fussin and a fightin
Wont you get me to the rhyme,
I wanna move.

Chorus

Oh! wow!

Oh! Im playin in a travelin band;
Playin in a travelin band.
Wont you get me, take me hand
Well, Im playin in a travelin band,
Well, Im flyin cross the land.
Tryin to get a hand,
Playin in a travelin band, oh! wow!

Hey!

Sorry, not much into "fisherman-style" tunes. But I like nostalgia, and this one brings images of Boeing 707's in Pan American Airways colors, when the world was more virgin, stewardesses were young and beautiful, people dressed up to travel and air-rage was unheard of.

Frank Sinatra - Come Fly With Me Lyrics

(S. Cahn, J. Van Heusen)
[Recorded October 11, 1965, Hollywood]

Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away
If you can use some exotic booze
There's a bar in far Bombay
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away

Come fly with me, let's float down to Peru
In llama land there's a one-man band
And he'll toot his flute for you
Come fly with me, let's take off in the blue

Once I get you up there where the air is rarified
We'll just glide, starry-eyed
Once I get you up there I'll be holding you so near
You may hear angels cheer 'cause we're together

Weather-wise it's such a lovely day
You just say the words and we'll beat the birds
Down to Acapulco Bay
It's perfect for a flying honeymoon, they say
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away

[instrumental]

Once I get you up there where the air is rarified
We'll just glide, starry-eyed
Once I get you up there I'll be holding you so near
You may hear angels cheer 'cause we're together

Weather-wise it's such a lovely day
You just say the words and we'll beat the birds
Down to Acapulco Bay
It's perfect for a flying honeymoon, they say
Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly
Pack up, let's fly away!!

Well anything by Gordon Lightfoot gets my vote. But since deskie doesn't think Early morning Rain qualifies, how bout this one

http://www.hadfield.ca/Waltz/Bush_Pilot_Song.html

Bush Pilot's Song
As my floats touch the water, the sun’s behind the trees.
And the lake is barely rippled by the evening’s dying breeze.
I tie up this old Otter – pull the engine tent on tight,
For the first load of tomorrow will be airborne at first light.
[Chorus]
And I fly---y, up north most every day,
And I fly---y, it’s always been my way.
I’ve been up here for far too long but I still like what I see,
‘Cause I live here in the north, and the north lives here in me.
First there was a Vickers, next a Moth on floats,
A Fokker and a Fairchild and an Norseman hauling boats.
Stuff it in, tie it on, we’d haul it all away.
The kind of northern flying, I’m doing here today.

So I start this 1340, and it rumbles into life.
You can see the blue smoke flying, but soon it idles nice.
And when I hit the throttle, the water turns to foam,
I love the way it drops away and leaves me free to roam.
[Chorus]
You know the men I fly with, mostly end up south.
They chase the blue-suit flying. They seem to have no doubts.
And though I have been tempted, I need no other call,
From break-up in the springtime, to freeze-up in the fall.

I have flown with dead men – their bodies cruelly torn.
And over Berens River once a baby girl was born.
The rich men from Chicago,
The quiet, steady, Cree.
(No matter) who they are from near or far they all have flown with me.
[Chorus, repeat the last 2 lines, and end]

or this one, also by Dave Hadfield

http://www.hadfield.ca/Northern/DC3.html

DC-3
I met a friend a while ago, abandoned in the winter snow;
A thing that meant the world to me when I was young.
A DC 3, a sight to see, a lesson from antiquity,
That opened up and taught to me what I've become.

Chorus
We used to fly the northern skies,
Higher, faster, further, than the ones who came before.
We'd fly, the northern skies,
From the gold mines, to the Dewline, to the wild arctic shore.

In the right seat of a DC 3, nothing else meant much to me,
I flew to live but truthfully, I lived to fly.
I'd figure out a course to steer, synch the props, raise the gear,
And when I see the way she's standing here, well I could cry.

Well in her day she reigned supreme, the northern lights own flying queen,
And in my hands we made a team and roamed so free.
From Moosonee on Hudson Bay to Inuvik, we knew the way,
From Lac La Ronge to Saguenay and in between

[Chorus]

I never thought those days could pass, or I could leave a land so vast,
But it all dried up and all too fast they parked my Dak.
I looked for work -- I really tried. I spent one winter high and dry,
So I said so long, I need to fly, and turned my back.
I'm flying still but from this jet I close my eyes and can't forget,
And in my heart I'm with her yet or so it seems,
I point this thing up off the ground, hauling 3-piece-suits around
But late at night I can be found in old sweet dreams.

[Chorus and end]

PS My vote is still for Early Morning Rain!

edited to give Mr Hadfield credit.

How 'bout Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly":

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone

A soul in tension thats learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

[It even has a couple pilots going through a checklist]

Friction lock - set.
Mixture - rich
Propellers - fully forward
Flaps - set - 10 degrees
Engine gauges and suction - check

Mixture set to maximum percent - recheck
Flight instruments...
Altimeters - check both
(garbled word) - on
Navigation lights - on
Strobes - on
(to tower): confirm 3-8-echo ready for departure
(tower): hello again, this is now 129.4
(to tower): 129.4. its to go.
(tower): you may commence your takeoff, winds over 10 knots.
(to tower): 3-8-echo
Easy on the brakes. take it easy. its gonna roll this time.
Just hand the power gradually, and it...

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

Theres no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Cant keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, i

....t was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.
You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off to find the sky...

One of the best songs by a brilliant singer/composer!!!!

Leavin home, out on the road
I've been down before
Ridin along in this big ol jet plane
Ive been thinkin about my home

But my love light seems so far away
And I feel like its all been done
Somebodys tryin to make me stay
You know Ive got to be movin on

Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Dont carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its here that Ive got to stay

Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people Ive trusted
I've got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know I might get busted

But my heart keeps calling me backwards
As I get on the 707
Ridin high I got tears in my eyes
You know you got to go through hell
Before you get to heaven

Big ol jet airliner
Dont carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its here that Ive got to stay

Touchin down in new england town
Feel the heat comin down
I've got to keep on keepin on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin around

And Im goin with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I dont want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin down in the city

Big ol jet airliner
Dont carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its here that Ive got to stay

Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Dont carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its here that Ive got to stay
Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

Big ol jet airliner
Dont carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its here that Ive got to stay

Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Carry me to my home
Oh, oh big ol jet airliner
Cause its there that I belong

Same tune, melody and beat as above. A bit funnier with these lyrics though

Goodbye to all my friends I've known
And the travel agent I trusted.
I'm riding along on this beat-up old plane;
Look out the window. All the rivets are rusted.

As that ground crew pushes us backwards
On that rickety L-1011,
I'm feeling around for that flotation device,
And when the safety film is shown,
I'm payin' close attention.

Beat-up old jetliner,
Hope you got a tune-up today.
Ohhhh, beat-up old jetliner,
Did they sneak you past the FAA?

Bouncin' 'round in a thunder cloud,
Landing gear won't come down.
My seatback is up and my belt is on.
I see the fire crews sprayin' foam on the ground.

And if I get to my final destination,
I know the next flight will surely be free.
But I don't think I'll go back up
Into that piece of shit just to save a few pennies.

Beat-up old jetliner
Won't carry me too far today.
Ohhhh, give me a fresh airliner;
I don't care what I've got to pay.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Beat-up old jetliner,
Don't carry me too far today.
Ohhhh, beat-up old jetliner,
'Cause it's home that I'd rather stay.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.
I've just turned off the no-smokin' sign.
I figure, hell, if the plane's smokin' why shouldn't you

good aviation song

Post by Sheila »

Artist: Chantal Kreviazuk
Album: Armageddon Soundtrack
Title: Leaving On A Jet Plane

I.............
I.............
All my bags are packed
I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin'
This early morn
The taxi's waitin'
He's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry
Chorus:
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe I hate to go
I................
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now
They don't mean a thing
Every place I go
I think of you
Every song I sing
I sing for you
When I come back
I'll wear your wedding ring
Chorus
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Close your eyes
I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the time when I don't have to say.............
Chorus
Leaving on a jet plane(repeat)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Stompin Tom's

Looossstt! Up in no man's land in the Northwest Territories,
He was lost up in no man's land the Martin Hartwell story.

Seriously, Murray McLauchlan's Timberline is a great song. I can't find the lyrics on the net and there's no liner notes on the casette I have.

Did someone say CELINE DION?

Celine Dion - You and I

High above the mountains, far across the sea
I can hear your voice calling out to me
Brighter than the sun and darker than the night
I can see your love shining like a light
And on and on this earth spins like a carousel
If I could travel across the world
The secrets I would tell

Chorus:
You and I
Were meant to fly
Higher than the clouds
We'll sail across the sky
So come with me
And you will feel
That we're soaring
That we're floating up so high
Cause you and I were meant to fly

Sailing like a bird high on the wings of love
Take me higher than all the stars above
I'm burning, yearning
Gently turning round and round
I'm always rising up I never
Want to come back down

Chorus x2
