Re: Plane stupid
When you compare the output of GHGs of aviation to the economic gains and what it accomplishes, planestupid is stupid. The aviation industry as a whole only contributes about 2% of global CO2 emissions.
Re: Plane stupid
Stop making sense and start feeling bad about the the helpless polar bears. Did you not see the video? Spare me your facts and reason! Dramatic visual impact is where its at.CanadianEh wrote:When you compare the output of GHGs of aviation to the economic gains and what it accomplishes, planestupid is stupid. But seriously, 400kg? That number is highly suspicious.
Re: Plane stupid
With all the drama going on about the leaked emails coming out of the UK, I dont think you will be hearing as much about "carbon" emissions for a little while.

Re: Plane stupid
Ya, I agree, 400 does seem suspicious, but even if it's correct that doesn't seem that bad for crossing half way around the earth! Imagine if all those people drove from Europe to here (even though it's impossible). It would likely be much more.AMM wrote:Stop making sense and start feeling bad about the the helpless polar bears. Re: Plane stupid
I think they're referring to flights withing Europe. But that even more reason to question this 400kg. Maybe they were looking at a 707.CanadianEh wrote:Ya, I agree, 400 does seem suspicious, but even if it's correct that doesn't seem that bad for crossing half way around the earth! I'd love to fly one right over their rally.
The pilots' seats have polar bear fur on them right?

Re: Plane stupid

That looks pretty much like every single Aeroflot flight you see coming and going from Moscow.
Being stupid around airplanes is a capital offence and nature is a hanging judge!

Re: Plane stupid
Funny how planes get blamed, cars produce way more emmisions, but a plane catches peoples attention better ( Big shiney things)
P.S. The graphic use of polar bears is in poor taste in my opinion, as bad as using kittens or puppies.

Re: Plane stupid
well, polar bear are considered threatened species and their likely or unlikely extinction is linked to the global warming which is caused as everyone knows by greenhouse gases.
so it is all symbolic to represent polar bears victims of the global warming caused by aviation. this video is aimed at shocking the opinion. Using aviation as a pretext is just a coward tool.
Aviation is a known nuisance and an easy target: noise is the first pollution and the rest is a matter of manipulating the masses.
that video is an example of pure manipulation.
just my opinion.

Re: Plane stupid
If people are so worried about polar bears, perhaps letting rich Texans flying up to shoot them for fun should be looked at before carbon!
Good documentary I saw a few years back, albeit heavy in bias but interesting in the opinions

As a Brit i'm more annoyed than most by the carbon lobby...another way Brown is making millions in taxes. Last time I flew back to Canada I was charged $80 as a "green tax"!

Re: Plane stupid
Me wonders how many of these these activists smoke a day? Thats ones huge carbon footprint, man!

Re: Plane stupid
I didn't read the link, but even if aviation only amounts to 2% of total global CO2 production, it's still worth reducing if at all possible. Small reductions everywhere amounts to a total large reduction. Building 'greener' aircraft but increasing global air travel certainly doesn't help either.

Worth reading. Pilots educate themselves in all aspects of aviation, so why not on the environmental impact?

I think a greater impact would come from everybody driving their cars less or driving more efficient ones.scm wrote:Small reductions everywhere amounts to a total large reduction.

Re: Plane stupid
Fifty years ago when polar bears were classified as little more than a nuisance, there was an estimated population of 5000 of them, worldwide. I say estimated, since there were no figures for the USSR. Today the global population is 20 - 25,000. They seem to have done quite well.
Re: Plane stupid
That's a little misleading. How much of a reduction in numbers is okay? 50 years ago the biggest threat to polar bears was hunting. Now the threat is climate change - which fortunately can be slowed.

It doesn't have to be one or the other. Why not both?Dino wrote:I think a greater impact would come from everybody driving their cars less or driving more efficient ones.scm wrote:Small reductions everywhere amounts to a total large reduction.

Re: Plane stupid
I've no idea, but people were happy with 5000, 50 years ago. Phil Jones and Michael Mann could probably cobble together a figure for us.That's a little misleading. How much of a reduction in numbers is okay?
Re: Plane stupid
If CO2 is supposed to be pollution then who the hell was doing all the polluting when our massive coal fields were formed?
The CO2 content in the atmosphere was several times as much as it is now and humans didn't even exist. Plant life needs CO2, that's why greenhouses pump in CO2 to promote growth. CO2 is "green" so to speak.
