I don't mind these split shifts at all. I'd rather do one of those than a normal red-eye any day. You go to work, do a one hour flight, go to the hotel for a few hours, come back and do another one hour flight and you're done. Many airlines do these shifts, and they often go quite senior. It's better than trying to stay awake for two five hour legs starting at 10PM or so.

Doing these split duty, continuous duty or stand ups as some call them, one often feels impared after the third night. I personally can't believe they're allowed. Getting 3 or 4 hours sleep here and there isn't good for your body.

Why?

If he goes through a program sponsored by his airline I have no issues seeing him back in the cockpit. All of these sponsored rehab programs are extremely strict when you're done. If he goes through a program, and abides by the rules he should be able to fly again. There are many pilots who have dealt with their addictions and made it back into the flight deck.
