Good morning,
New to this forum and have taken a big interest in aviation. I was wondering, in a commercial flight, how does the pilot or first officer toggle between cockpit conversation and ATC. Is there a button they must push on order to activate communication with ATC ? I know it's a dumb question but I'm really new to this. Logically I understand that what the cockpit might discuss may not always be professional for communication with ground.

Not a dumb question if you don't have experience with flying.
Big commercial jets and just about every other aircraft with 2 or more seats (think training aircraft at a flying school) use a similar system. You wear a headset and communications within the aircraft (between pilots, instructor and student, or pilot and passenger) are voice activated, just speak into the microphone. When the pilot wants to talk to ATC they push a button ('push-to-talk').
