What should pilots do going forward?

Post by pacman007 »

So with Covid out of control In the US what should pilots do with expiring MOAs at major airlines and corporate jet companies?
Is it better to let the companies cut pilot numbers to the minimum, or continue keeping maximum pilots on with reduced wages for another 6 months or a year? I have had many conversations with other pilots and I have heard an argument for both.

As a furloughed AC pilot, cut me but protect the contract.

Hope you emailed the MEC like I did. Everyone who wasn't able to be in the survey should do that. If you're on the slack chat, someone made a survey template. Go check it out.

I agree, I'm furloughed too and I think they should protect the contract. Lower salaries for those still working should not become the new normal.

Even after the expiry of the government PPP program in the US, many companies have offered and pilot groups have accepted voluntary ‘no fly’ paid time off options NOT associated with early retirement incentives.

AC has already run reduction bid #1. Only question is whether it will suggest the need for a further reduction. Perhaps at that time a paid time off option will present itself.

As much as most of us want to keep our jobs and keep money rolling in, keeping more pilots on reduced wages will diminish wages and working conditions long-term.

If this goes on long enough supply and demand will cause wages at a lot of smaller carriers to decrease, but keeping conditions at the larger employers the same as they are now will ensure that wages come back to normal more quickly as things get back to normal.

It's not just about your contract, but the industry as a whole.

Looks like we all know what AC pilots want. What about corporate, WestJet, Swoop and transat

I agree with the above commenters, most important thing is to maintain the contract.

If worst comes to pass and we're getting forced to make concessions under arbitration or by the government, we're better to take those as pay concessions and maintain scope and the other guarantees and protection afforded in the contract.

Once those are gone, they won't come back, pay we can get back.

I was made to believe that being open to wage concessions was a requirement to qualify for government loans. Not that we had to accept them, but that we had to be open to the idea.

We’ve all made wage concessions for those of us still employed. Being blocked at the minimum alone is a pay cut. Being bumped to the right seat is another large pay cut.

What’s wrong with reduced blocks tied in with less days? The value of your work is still the same.

Having more pilots employed at 705 carriers reduces the supply at 704/703 thus preserving those wages. It also means more Captains keep their left seat and pay.
