If I'm getting paid to sit around and do nothing while other people get their shit together, I'm not complaining. But you're right - if I'm not getting paid for it, I'm very unhappy.

It takes a lot of guts to drop an aviation career and just get on with it. Having done it, I can say that it is hard. You do what you have to do.

It certainly isn’t that uncommon to see/hear of individuals leaving a career in aviation in pursuit of other interests. I have seen it happen over the years from all sides, general aviation, bush, corporate and even airline. The latter is usually after a layoff, as one person indicated” just wasn’t interested is chasing flying all over the place again”. I assume like yourself, most were content with their decision and moved on to success in their chosen endeavours.
