Do people still commute?

Post by 3dispatchers »

Hey Everyone!

I was in the industry for many, many years and got out to try O&G about 2.5 years ago. I'm coming back into teh industry and know it's going to be a pay cut. I have a 3 bedroom place close to YYC and thought about getting a newbie or a commuter but don't even know if people commute anymore now that base systems seem to be more common. Thoughts?

Was chatting with a YYC Q pilot. Lives on Vancouver island and commutes. Said it's not bad.

Some 45% of WestJet pilots commute. One third of Encore pilots commute. That's no small number. A good number of those commute to YYC.

That's just WestJet. I'm sure there are a lot of Jazz Q and CRJ drivers that commute to YYC from YVR.

What are the commuting clauses / requirements for the majors and regionals these days?

I think Jazz used to be you could commute - but you had to give yourself at least 2 flights to get to your base. If you missed your flight, there wasn't negative consequences (as long as it didn't happen very often).

I don't think Air Canada has such a clause - you can live wherever, but you'd better not miss your flights (except when on reserve, where you have a certain call out time).

Can anyone confirm the above and shed information on the policies at WJ, Encore, Porter, Skyregional, Sunwing & Transat? I don't have any applications out, but have had a few people ask me if I knew.

You're correct regarding Jazz. As for the others I couldn't tell you.

WestJet has a similar policy, you need a primary and secondary flight. If you can't get on either, then you won't be disciplined, however you will lose the pay. They will then try to get you to your pairing or reassign you.
