703 pilots of AvCan. How many hours do you see each month?
From King Airs, to Navajos, and single engines. Just curious how life is out there for other 703 pilots? Sked or charter, and how many hours/days of work do you see each month on average?

Used to do between 80-90 per month, nowadays closer to 50 per month doesn't bother me either way as I'm on salary would be worse if I was on mileage.

Max out for one month, maybe 50 either side of it, handful of hours for half a dozen months and zero for the other three.
Anything else would be like working for a living.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Sounds like it's pretty standard across the board. I am flying now, around 70 a month. In the summer it was close to 100 but it slowed down. Good to see some comparisons.

During the usual season, last week of May till mid October 60-90 hours a month.....
Off season mid November to mid April, 12-16 hours a week, on the golf courses
of Southern California....life can be harsh....

If I could go back and tell my younger self that some day the less you fly the happier you'll be, I don't think I would believe me.
Occasionally I think I fly a lot, then I review my 30/60/90 spreadsheet I realise how slack my life is. Awesome!

Occasionally 100, more often 80, down to 20 in the shoulder and nothing December -March
The only three things a wingman should ever say: 1. "Two's up" 2. "You're on fire" 3. "I'll take the fat one"

I had a few 703 jobs over the years...
One was around 50 or 60 hrs/month 4 sometimes 5 days a week, weekends off - Light twin.
Another was about 400 hrs / year mix of charter and medevac - small turboprop - with lots of days 'available', only a few on call... they were always f'n around with scheduling - basically cars max @ 14/3 but you never seemed to be needed... At least it was salary. Looking back that was a good job - so slack... But I wanted to fly...
So the next job was close to 1000/year 4 - 5 days a week - long days. Large turboprop. That sure ruined it all. That was work.

geez I feel like I have too much spare time as it is with 3 day weekends and odd weekdays off. I can't imagine what it would be like if I only flew 25 hours a month. If I was in a big city I could see it being alright, but not in a town with very little to do.

Maybe you should learn some hobbies outside of playing with airplanes all day, Billy.upintheair_ wrote:geez I feel like I have too much spare time as it is with 3 day weekends and odd weekdays off. I'm working on my German and trying to learn the guitar. I got things.

Eh, I'm in the city so I manage to keep somewhat busy. I'd probably go completely insane if I was still up North on this schedule though.

For the 1st ,5000hrs,I flew my ass off,and still managed 2-3 months off each year sitting on some tropical beach while averaging 800-1,000 a year...the second 5,000hrs,I flew my ass off but managed 5-6 months off, sitting on a tropical beach....the next 5,000 ,took a little longer, averaging 300hrs a year, but sitting on a tropical beach for almost 8 months a year...Now 35 years later,I sit on the land I bought on the tropical island for10 months a year, and fly 2 months a year just to get the itch for flying out of my crotch,and... because I can.....it was all float flying, and except for a few terrifying moments,it was a frikking blast.....feels like I never worked a day in my life...and the hardest thing I do now ,is pull the dingy down the beach to the water to go out to the boat...and its a lot easier at high tide these days...life is not about hours and tin...
