Penticton Flying Club - Cessna 172 with low wet rate of $115

Post by FlySigi »

I noticed that the Penticton Flying Club has a Cessna 172 with a low wet rate of $115 per hour, and they want a $2000 non-refundable initiation fee to join.

Is there any other club in BC with a low wet rate like that?

Beat me to it. Fools and their money are soon parted.

The website gives the impression of a certain longevity, without trying too hard.

It says they have 20 flying members, which covers most of the cost of the aircraft but how do they finance maintenance? It's do-able...

I'll vouch for the Penticton Flying Club. I was actually just talking with one of their members who has been with them for decades just yesterday. They have a pretty selfless commitment to keep aviators aviating for reasonable costs.

Maybe they should open some satellite branches across Canada then :-)

It's generally risky putting upfront money forward. That's all. Maybe this one is fine.

$115 isn't unreasonable right now with fuel prices being fairly low, as long as they aren't trying to make a profit. If they have a good amount of usage then $50-$60/hr for maintenance and insurance is reasonable. They could be running Mogas which would bring the fuel price down to somewhere around $30-$40/hr, which leaves a little extra for parking and/or reserves.

I'm one of the pilots that fly the PFC Cessna 172.

The PFC owns the 172 since 2011 and has never raised the hourly rate since. We do not have to make any profit, and thats why we can keep the hourly rate as low as possible (aka affordable).

BFB's engine is getting closer to 2000hrs and we do have enough money in the bank to do the overhaul and all other maintenance.

I guess Rookie50 knows something I don't know or why else would he/she make a comment like that.

BTW - If somebody is interested in joining the PFC club plane, check our website @ http://www.pentictonflyingclubcopafifty.com

My local club rents the 172M @ $110/hr wet. However there are other volunteer things at the club to be take care of at that price.

You don't need to defend the club to me. If people feel it's safe based on the history and solid, audited financial records to put up $2k in advance, that's fine. My comment is that those things unknown, is a risk factor.

I remember when a 172 went for $100/hr wet, and that was at a for-profit flight school. I'm not even that old.
