Trip out West
We will be flying out west next week and wondering where is a good place to stop overnight between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. Preferably an airport not too far from hotel accommodation at reasonable price. And in case I make YWG, is there good accommodation near St-Andrews or better go to YWG?
Thanks
Michel

Re: Trip out West
Probably best to press on to CYWG - lots of hotels near the airport there; not so much at St.Andrews.
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Re: Trip out West
Brandon is nice and quiet. There are a couple hotels only a few km south of the airport.rigpiggy wrote:went thru brandon last month on delivery, cheapest fuel that side of alberta

Thank you for your input. Guess I'll try to make YWG the first day.

Re: Trip out West
Dryden (CYHD) is a good stop. Best Western is recommended.
Re: Trip out West
Anyone know about Vermillion Bay airport, between Dryden and Kenora (1/2 btwn Thunder Bay and Winnipeg) ?
Just south down the street is the floatplane dock / couple km to the motel "$86" / 807 227 5339... can ask for a lift / if the weather's OK, or keep it in mind in case of divertion. If you're not so interested (while enroute) in trees / rocks/ floatplanes/ fishing ... carry on to YWG

A few of the hotels at YWG have free shuttle service to/from the airport. The Holiday Inn did as of a few years ago.Mooney21 wrote:Thank you for your input. Guess I'll try to make YWG the first day.

Re: Trip out West
I received excellent service on two stop overs at the Esso FBO two years and three years ago.
They drove me to my hotel in the crew van and collected me in the morning.
I stayed at the Clarion hotel both times for $99/night booked through the FBO.
Many restaurant choices (and movie theatre) within short walking distance.
Highly recommend.

Re: Trip out West
I can recommend Fort Frances, ON (CYAG). It is 165 NM from YQT, and 167 NM to YWG, for a total only 7 NM more than the direct routing. It is a nice town, with friendly airport staff, and a reasonable GA community.

Re: Trip out West
Fort Frances was nice when I stopped there last year. Nice airport. Staff let me use their car to go get food. Stay clear of the McDonalds.
Re: Trip out West
Thanks again. Fort Frances looks like a good alternate if unable YWG the first day.
